Thoughts and Words ~ 8

After a night of sleeping with Ainsley, Sam was ready to take the plunge and propose. He knew her birthday was coming up and it would be so perfect for them. It would really be a surprise. This last week of slowing down and keeping distance from one another really wasn't working. It had strengthened his determination to make it work. Sam knew that he would never be like his father and cheat. Ainsley was the one woman in all that he had dated, that he wanted to be with forever. She was his soulmate and knew the real person inside of him.

They both got up, ate breakfast, and went to work. The conversation was minimal, as neither was a morning person. They weren't fighting, but each was deep in thought about each other and other work stuff.

Sam ensconced himself in his office and started making plans for dinner at his place, catered in, of course. It had to be perfect with no mistakes. The night had to go off without a hitch. A girl remembered her marriage proposal forever. He couldn't ruin Ainsley's moment.

He sat in his office and pondered on thinking of how he would propose. He paced in his office, practicing different ways of asking her to marry him. At one point, while he was on his knee, Toby came in and saw him.

"What on earth are you doing, Sam?" Toby looked at him with raised eyebrows, as to inquire about a reason that the Deputy Director of Communications was in his office, on his knees.

"I...uh...Don't you ever knock?" he asked, changing the subject and getting off the floor.

"I did, but you didn't answer."

"Oh." Sam got up. "What did you need?"

After Toby got what he needed, Sam went back to work. He'd already worked out the way to propose. It was going to be perfect.

Several Days Later........

When all of the meetings of the day were done, he went down to Ainsley's office and persuaded her to go to his apartment for dinner. The ride home was relatively silent, Sam thinking of how Ainsley would react when he proposed, and Ainsley thinking about how much she truly loved Sam. There would be lots of surprises for both of them.

"Sam, what is all this?" Ainsley looked around the room, at the candles and the perfectly set table in the middle of his living room.

"Just dinner. I know you've had it hard for the last couple of days, so I wanted to do something nice for you." Sam tried to be nonchalant about the whole thing, even though he was nervous and kept thinking that he would fall or trip over something.

"This is great. Thank you." Ainsley was secretly delighted that the man in her life would go through all this trouble to make her happy and smile. Sam was god's gift to women. He was her gift. Sam was the guy who made her smile when everything was going to hell in a handbasket in her life.

Sam pulled her chair out and played the gentlemen. They both dug into the food, every once in a while looking up at the other person and sharing a smile.

After dinner, it was time for the big moment. Sam cleared his throat, walked over to her chair, and went down on one knee, pulling the ring box out of his pocket.

"Ainsley, I love you and want to be with you always. Please marry me." Sam held open the ring box.

"Yes, yes, yes. A thousand yeses." Ainsley scrambled out of her chair and into Sam's arms. What a perfect moment.

The next evening she just sat there on the sofa, in shock. She didn't know how to tell him or even rather to not tell him and take care of the problem on her own. Ainsley looked at the beautiful ring that Sam had given to her and smiled. But how would she tell him? What would she say? What would he say? There were more questions than she had answers for. She sat back on the sofa and waited for him to come home. Ainsley knew that this wasn't gonna be easy for any of them.

She then heard the key in the lock and saw him in the entry way. "Hey," he said, coming over to her. "Are you feeling better?" Sam had a concerned look on his face. When she was sick, he worried about her.

"Yeah, it must have been something in the food we ate yesterday evening that made me sick." Ainsley was already showing the telltale beginning signs. It was not gonna be long before he figured it out on his own if she didn't tell him. How was she supposed to tell him? Would she just blab it out to him? She sighed and put her head back.

"Ainsley? Everything okay," he asked, noticing that she had drifted someplace else. "Ainsley? Hello?"

"Hmm?" Her head shot up. "Oh. Sorry," she said, blushing a little. "I was just thinking about something."

"Are you sure everything is okay?" He sat down next to her.

"Sure. Everything is fine," she said quickly.

"No, everything isn't fine. What aren't you telling me, Ainsley?" he asked, knowing she was keeping something from him. Sam only hoped it wasn't something bad.

"Sam, don't worry about it. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. Probably an early winter's case of the flu." Ainsley had made the appointment to confirm what she already knew. She wanted to make sure that it was completely accurate before she gave Sam the news that would completely change both of their lives.
