Thoughts and Words ~ 7

Sam and Ainsley walked out of the building and to his car. Sam opened the driver's side and unlocked Ainsley's door and the two got into the car and drove back to Sam's apartment. "So, what did you want for dinner?" Sam asked as they proceeded to drive home. He was trying to make conversation because Ainsley had been silent for way too long. Sam knew the rumors hurt her deeply.

"Well, I was thinking Chinese. I haven't had it for...I don't know how long," she said, laughing a little and looking happier than she had been. Food always brought out her good side.

"Okay, Chinese it is then. Do you want to stop somewhere and order it to go, or do you just want to go to the apartment and call it in and have it delivered?"

"Let's just go to your place, Sam. I'm so tired right now." Ainsley slumped back down in the seat as she remembered her day. She really didn't want to have to go out and put on a happy face. She wanted to slide into sweats and pig out on junk food.

"Okay." He smiled at her and continued to drive. Once home, he unlocked the door and turned on the lights. "I'll go call the place," he said, walking into the living room to find his phonebook.

"Thanks." She sat down on the sofa while Sam called the restaurant. He already knew what she wanted, so he didn't have to ask her.

After getting off the phone, Sam walked back into the living room and sat on the couch beside her. He didn't want her to be unhappy about things that were out of his control.

"I am sorry about what happened today." He tried to apologize.

"It's not your fault those two idiots are making up lies." Ainsley didn't blame Sam for something that was out of his control and out of his responsibility.

"I did the best to nip it in the bud, but I can't promise anything." Sam felt bad that he couldn't fix this all and make it go away.

"I know. It's not your fault it happened." She rested her hand on top of his in a silent gesture.

"I know, but I still feel responsible."

"Don't. You had nothing to do with this. Thanks for all that you did for me today."

The food arrived and they both dug in with gusto. After dinner, they sat watching a movie and trying to relax a little bit.

Sam looked at Ainsley. "Do you want to stay here tonight?"

"Sure, I'll stay." She looked at him, "To tell you the truth, I don't want to be alone."

He nodded, "That's fine." He took her hand. "I'm here for you, you know that, right?"

"Yes Sam, I know that."

"Okay, I was just making sure."

"Can I wear those Duke sweats of yours that I like?" Ainsley was trying to keep from yawning.

"Yeah, it's late. Let's go to bed."

Sam went to lock up and turn off lights while Ainsley changed and slid into bed. He removed the rest of his clothes and slid in next to her. Sam wrapped his arms around her and rested his head on top of hers. He loved to cuddle with her.
