The Addition ~ 26

She couldn't stop thinking about what had gone on at the airport. Why was her mother acting that way? She always said she would be happy for her daughter when she had children. What was so different about Maddie?

"CJ?" Toby said from the other side of the table.

She looked up at him, "Hmm?"

"You've been twirling the spaghetti on your fork for about five minutes now. Everything alright?"

"Yeah...Everything's fine." She said distantly.

"It's about your mother, isn't it?"

She sighed, "What does she have against Maddie?"

"Probably nothing. She just needs to get used to having a granddaughter."

"Yeah, you're probably right."

"I know I am." He smiled softly. "Now eat your dinner."

"Yes, daddy." She took a bite of her spaghetti.

NEXT MORNING

"Coming," CJ said, running to the door. "Hi mom, dad," she said as she opened it.

"Good morning, sunshine," her father said, kissing her on the head. "How might you be this fine morning?"

"I'm doing just fine, thank you, dad." She looked over at her mother. "How are you doing mom? Did you sleep well?"

"Yes, I did, thank you," she said as she walked into the living room. "Almost ready?"

"Yeah, Toby's getting Maddie ready."

"Oh."

"Here we are," Toby said a minute later, carrying Maddie into the living room. "Good morning James, Lauren."

"Gwandpa!" Maddie said with a smile.

"Well hello there, sweetheart," he said.

She turned to her grandmother. "Gwandma!"

"Hi there, Maddie," she said, barely looking at her.

CJ rolled her eyes. "Ready?"

"Yeah, let's go," Toby said as he got his and Maddie's coats on.

"So Claudia, how is work going?" Lauren asked once they were seated at the table.

"It's just fine, thank you. Busy but fine."

"Well that's good."

Maddie looked over at Toby. "Picktuwe," she whispered.

"Oh yeah." He whispered back.

"Lauren, Maddie has something for you."

"What's that?" She asked, looking in Maddie's direction.

"Picktuwe!" Maddie handed her grandmother a picture of what looked like a rainbow.

Lauren couldn't help but smile. "That's very nice, Maddie. Do you like to color?"

She nodded.

CJ watched the exchange between her mother and daughter and smiled. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

Maddie picked up a french fry and dipped it in ketchup...Only when she tried to put it in her mouth, she missed by a few inches. "Uh oh!" She said, looking up at her parents and grandparents.

"That's okay honey," CJ said, beginning to get up.

"No, no, I'll take her and clean her up," Lauren said as she picked Maddie up out of her chair.

"Okay...Thanks," CJ said, smiling.

"That's more like it," James said out loud to himself.

"What was that, dad?"

"Oh nothing. Let's just say I had a little talk with your mother last night." He winked at her and continued to eat his lunch.

CJ looked over at Toby and smiled. He took her hand, "See? I told you things would be okay," he said softly.

"Yeah, you did," she said as Lauren and Maddie came back to the table.
