A Wonderful Life ~ 35

"My life sucks. My life sucks. My life sucks."

"How long has he been saying that?" Sam walked out and sat next to Josh.

"For about three hours now," Josh moaned.

"We should find him his balls," Sam nodded.

"That didn't sound right, Sam," Josh shook his head.

"Shut up!" Sam smacked him. "I think he leaves them in his desk."

"I don't want to go get them," Josh moaned. "Does Jack have a ball or something."

"It's a big, bouncy one," Sam shrugged.

"That should do," Josh nodded.

"I'll go get it," Sam hurried off.

"Hey Toby," Josh looked over at him. Toby was laying on the couch.

"My life sucks. My life sucks." Toby kept saying.

"Here," Sam rushed over to Toby and handed him a big, blue ball.

"My life sucks," Toby started throwing it up in the air. "This doesn't feel right."

"Being here?" Sam nodded.

"No. I want my small balls," Toby moaned.

"I'm leaving," Josh rolled his eyes and stood up. "Toby, call and talk to CJ."

"No," Toby tossed the ball at Josh and closed his eyes.

"He's two years old," Josh moaned, sarcastically. "Grow up Toby," Josh ordered and tossed the ball back at Toby, which bounced off his face. Yet he didn't move.

ZIEGLER HOME

"I thought he would have been home by now," Derek said.

"I thought I told you to go to sleep," CJ said as she sat on his bed.

He sighed and looked at CJ. "Mom, did you and dad have a fight or something?"

"What makes you think that?"

"I can just tell," he said, shrugging.

She looked down and then at Derek. "We had a little argument."

"How come?"

"Because grown-ups do that sometimes. They argue. Now go to sleep."

"I'm not tired though."

"It's after midnight and you have school tomorrow," she said rather sternly.

"Okay fine, I'll go to sleep." He turned so that he wasn't facing her and closed his eyes.

She kissed him goodnight and left the room. "Where are you, Toby?" She said out loud to herself when she left Derek's room. She walked into her room and sat on the bed. She then picked up the phone.

JOSH'S APARTMENT

"Hello," Josh answered, out of breath.

"Josh? What have you been doing? Or do I not want to know?"

"I just came in the door." He said as he took his coat off and set his keys on the table.

"Oh. Is Toby there by any chance?"

"No, he's at Sam's, moping. Why he's there, I don't know."

"Why don't you know?"

Josh sat down on the sofa. "He sort of said a few things to Sam today that were...not very nice."

"What sort of things?" CJ asked as she leaned back against the back of the bed.

"Let's just say it was bad. He pretty much told Sam off and told him he doesn't know anything."

"Why would he say that?" CJ asked.

"Because Toby was mad. Now Toby thinks he's a bad friend. A bad father. And a bad husband."

"I'm so mad at him," CJ snapped. "He knows Sam looks up to him."

"I know."

"Is Sam okay?"

"Yeah," Josh nodded. "He forgave Toby. I think."

"You think?"

"Toby went over there drunk. Sam let him in. So I'm thinking Sam forgave him."

"Maybe Sam's just being Sam," CJ smiled. "He can't stay mad at Toby for some reason."

"I can. Toby threw a ball at me," Josh moaned.

"I'm hanging up now," CJ smirked.

"Are you going to call?"

"NO," CJ said quickly. "I'll wait for him to say sorry."

"Well, that's never going to happen," Josh said.

"Bye," CJ moaned and hung up. "I won't let him win," CJ said to herself and turned the lamp off. "He'll come back."

SAM'S HOUSE

"She's going to have to apologize before I go back," Toby snapped, as Sam covered him up. "I'm not going to let her win this time. I was right."

"Goodnight Toby," Sam moaned and turned off the light.

"Sam," Toby looked over at him.

"Yeah?"

"I am sorry to you, however."

"Thanks," Sam smiled and walked upstairs.

"I'm a bad friend," Toby said to himself.

"I heard that," Sam said from the stairs. "If you say that one more time, I'm going to kick you out of here so fast you won't know what happened."

"Okay, fine." Toby sighed and looked up at the ceiling. He heard a door upstairs close. "I'm a bad friend," he said again.

A door upstairs opened. "I heard that too! Go to sleep you moron."

"I'm sorry Sam, I didn't mean to hurt you."

Sam walked downstairs and turned a light on. "I know. You were venting."

"How do you do it?"

"Do what?"

"Not stay mad at people? I mean, I completely made your father sound like a jerk. I made it sound as if you know next to nothing at all. How can you still forgive me after all that?"

Sam sat down adjacent to Toby. "I'm used to it. My dad used to always make promises he wouldn't keep. Alike coming to soccer matches or debate team tournaments. I always forgave him because he always said he was sorry. But after what I just recently learned..."

"Yeah." Toby looked at Sam. "You are a really good friend, you know that?"

"Thanks. So are you. Now go to sleep."

"Okay." Toby closed his eyes, not to mention his mouth and went to sleep.
