Two Minutes

She looked through the window of the room. How had this happened? Why did it happen? She should have been there, she should have taken him home. This was her fault, she said over and over to herself in her head.

Since when did two minutes go by so quickly? Everything was just fine one minute...Not so fine the next. As she relived the moments, warm tears began to fall down her face. Why did this have to happen to him? Why?

EARLIER THAT EVENING

"Toby, are you leaving soon," CJ asked as she walked into his office.

"Please, do come in," he said sarcastically.

She crossed her arms across her chest. "Toby."

"Yes, I just have to finish this one thing up, then I'm done."

"Okay." She sat down in one of the chairs in front of his desk.

He looked up at her. "You don't have to wait for me. I know my way home."

"I know you know that, dummy. I'm going to drive you."

"CJ, how many times do we have to go over this," he asked in a whiny tone.

"As many times as it will take to mash it into your head that your car isn't safe enough." She said simply.

"CJ, my car is fine." He looked back down at what he was working on.

She raised her eyebrows. "Oh really? Then why is it always making those weird noises?"

"I have no idea what you're talking about," he said as he closed his laptop and turned off and put it in his bag.

"Yes you do. You just won't admit it to me that you know what I'm talking about." She followed him as he walked out of his office.

"Ginger, you can go home, I'm done for the night," he called out to her.

"Night Toby," she called back.

He walked out of the building, CJ trailing him.

"I'm telling you Toby, just tonight, let me drive you home. We can call a tow truck in the morning or something so someone can look at it. I really don't want you driving that...that thing."

"What are you, my mother?" He glanced over at her as he continued walking. He took his keys out of his pocket and unlocked the door.

"Toby, please," she said before he got in.

"CJ, I'll be fine. If anything does happen, I have my cell phone, okay? I'll call you if I need anything." He got into his car, started it, and drove off, leaving CJ standing in the middle of the parking lot.

She couldn't just stand there. She had to at least follow him, make sure he got home safely. She walked briskly towards her car and drove away, trying to find him in the traffic. 'Great,' she thought to herself as she stopped in the traffic jam. She looked over at the clock in her car. 9:30. 'Who goes anywhere at 9:30 on a Thursday,' she said aloud to herself as she slowly ascended down the road.

Not too far ahead, she saw them. Flashing lights, those of a police car, an ambulance, and fire engine. She saw the back of a car. Her eyes began to openwide. 'Please, don't let it be...' She then saw the license plate and quickly drove over to the shoulder of the road and parked the car. She got out, trying to find Toby.

"Toby!" She yelled through the police officers and paramedics.

"May I help you, ma'am," one of the paramedics asked.

"That car," she said, pointing to the totaled car, "Where is the driver of it?"

"He's in the ambulance, ma'am." The woman began walking back to the vehicle.

"What the hell happened?!" CJ demanded.

The woman turned around and faced CJ. "Apparently the car spun out of control and fell into the ditch over there. It was upside down when we got here. The driver of the car was unconscious."

CJ didn't know what to say. "Is he going to be okay," she asked in almost a whisper.

"We don't know ma'am. We're taking him to the hospital now."

"I'm coming with you," she said.

"Ma'am..."

"No, you don't understand! I need to be with him right now! He can't be alone! He's my best friend. Please." CJ pleaded.

The woman looked into CJ's eyes and could see that she really was serious. "All right, this way please."

CJ followed the paramedic to the ambulance and got in. They were soon speeding down the highway to the hospital, sirens blaring. CJ looked at Toby who looked like he was asleep with several bruises and cuts. She took his hand. "Come on Toby, I know you. You'll be fine. Just wake up. Please, just wake up," she barely managed to get out.

PRESENT

She looked through the glass again as one of the doctors examined Toby. This had to be a bad dream. It just had to. This kind of thing would never have happened had she taken the keys away from him.

She turned around and walked back to the waiting area where Sam, Josh, and Leo were sitting. She leaned up against a wall. She couldn't sit down with them. She felt as if she was the enemy; that this would not have happened had she been more abrupt with him.

Everything was fine one minute...Not so fine the next.
