The Night That Almost Wasn't
He took his bow-tie off and put it around the robber's hands. "Just stay
right there, all right? Don't move." He got up and went back to the cashier
to pay for what he was about to buy. "I'm not trying to cause any trouble
here--" He paused when he noticed that it would have been too easy for there
to be just one person.
As if in slow motion, he looked out of the market window and saw him. There
stood a man with a gun, pointed directly at him. For a moment, he didn't
do anything. Suddenly, Simon drew his weapon and fired. As soon as three
loud shots rang through the air, he looked out at the man who was now laying
dead on the ground. He took a deep, shaky breath. "This is Donovan," he said
into his communicating device, "I have two armed suspects here..."
Within seconds, police and a couple of Secret Service agents had swarmed the
place. "Nice job, Donovan," one of them said as he patted him on the back.
"Yeah. I'm going to...uh...head back to the theatre now," he said, rather
shaken up at what had just happened.

"CJ," Ron whispered.
She looked up at him. "Yeah?"
"I need to tell you something." His face was solemn and had a look of
'something horrible has just happened' in it.
She got up and followed Ron out into the hall. "What's going on? Is
everything all right?"
He didn't say anything for a minute. Finally, after taking a deep breath he
said, "Yes, but it almost wasn't."
She looked at him with confusion in her eyes. "What do you mean?" Horror
took over her confused look on her face. "Oh no. He wasn't--"
"No, but it was close," he said, interrupting her. "He was fast enough so
that he caught both of them." He said. He continued to tell her what had
just happened. CJ just stood there, stunned.

Three and a half hours later, the play ended. CJ had gone back in but hadn't
been paying any attention to it. All she wanted to know was whether or not
he was okay. As soon as the lights came back on, she moved quickly past Toby
and into the hall. It was then that she saw him pacing back and forth.
"Simon," she said, quietly.
He looked up at her. 'G-d she's beautiful,' he thought to himself. He gave
her a small smile. "Yes, Ms. Cregg?" He asked in a teasing manner.
"Oh thank G-d you're all right!" She walked briskly over to him and put her
arms around him, not caring who saw them.
He in return put his arms around her. "Yes, I'm fine. I told you that if
you're dead, I'm dead. Well, you're not dead, so I guess I'm not."
She smiled and placed a quick kiss on his cheek. "How on earth did you
manage to get out of there alive?"
"Well, like I said about a week ago, I don't fall down when I shoot a gun."
She hit him lightly on the arm. "That's not funny. You could have really
been hurt. Or even worse. You could have been--"
"Yeah, but I wasn't," he said quietly.
"No, you weren't."
"Ahem," Ron said. "Sorry to ruin this...moment but we're leaving now."
"Right," Simon said. He turned back to CJ. "May I escort you to your
motorcade?" He held his arm out for her.
"Yes you may." She smiled and slipped her arm through his. "I honestly don't what I would do without you," she said as the two began walking out of
the theatre.
"You'd probably be miserable with some other agent tailing you and not
letting you out of their sight."
"Yeah, but I'm glad that you were that someone."
He helped her into the car and began to walk away towards a different car.
She took his hand. "Where are you going?"
"Well, you don't need protection anymore."
"So?" She shrugged. "I would still like for you to be in the same car as
me." She smiled and moved over so he could get inside.
"If you insist."
"I do."
Once in the car, he looked at her. "You know, you are probably the most
difficult person I have had to protect?"
"Yeah, but I was the nicest, wasn't I?" She turned to him.
"Well, yeah."
"I thought so." She moved in and kissed him gently on the lips, never
wanting to be separated from him again.
He kissed her back and stared into her eyes as it ended. "In a way," he said
quietly, "this was the night that almost wasn't."
"But it was," she said as she kissed him again.
"Yes, it was," he whispered.
They rode to the airport where they then got on to Air Force One and rode
back to D.C. together, not taking their eyes off of one another for more
than a few seconds. CJ had finally found the man of her dreams and this was meant to be.
