"Mr. President, I don't think..."
"What, I just got done with the budget meeting. I have some time." Jed smiled.
"Sir..."
"CJ, for crying out loud, I'm a father of three. I think I can handle watching a kid for thirty minutes." Jed snapped.
"Yes sir." CJ said quickly.
"Wow." Derek smiled while looking up at him.
"What is it pal?" Jed asked.
"Your the only one who's been able to shut my mom up." Derek looked up in amazement. Then he looked up at CJ who was glaring at him.
"CJ, first of all, we'll have fun." Jed grabbed the kid and started to walk away with him. "Second, I think he's safer with me right now." Jed said as they hurried back to the oval office.
"CJ, the meeting."
"In now!" CJ snapped at Carol and walked back to her office. "Ann." CJ greeted her.
"Hey CJ."
"Am I scary?" CJ asked before sitting down.
"What?" Ann asked confused.
"My son just said...Never mind." CJ sat down. "What's up?"
"I didn't know you had a son."
"Yep, I'm a proud parent of a kid who is now grounded for the rest of his life." CJ said sarcastically.
"Who's the father?" Ann asked.
"Toby is," CJ said proudly. She didn't care who knew now.
"Oh, well congratulations. I never knew you were pregnant."
"Well, I wasn't. We sort of are in the process of adopting him. It's a long story."
"Ah, okay. Well, I guess we should get down to business then."
"Good idea." CJ was glad to not talk about her personal life too much with Ann Stark.
Meanwhile, in the Oval Office...
"What's it like being the President," Derek asked Jed.
"Well, it's like being the boss of a really, really big company," Jed said.
"You mean like Toys R Us?"
"Yeah, just like Toys R Us." Jed smiled. "So have you started school yet, Derek?"
"Well, I was supposed to start today, but we were late getting out of the house."
"Oh?"
"Yeah. Dad was not smart because he didn't park his car in the garage, so his didn't work, so we had to take mom's, and they fought over who would get to drive, and mom finally said something to dad that made him let her drive, and we went to the school where Ms. Klein, the lady in charge, said I can start tomorrow."
"Wow, you have had quite a morning," Jed said giggling a little. He could tell that Derek was a very special kid. "So I'm guessing you haven't started school yet."
"Nope."
"How about learning some History?"
"Sure!" Derek sounded enthusiastic.
Jed was impressed. No one on his staff ever liked his History lessons or trivia. "Okay, let me start by telling you about National Parks."
Back in CJ's office....
"No!" CJ screamed
"CJ, hear me out..." Ann started.
"Ann, your guy wants to be elected president, right?"
"Yes."
"And now you want me to allow your guys' Press Secretary to walk into my pressroom to do a briefing about public policy?"
"Yes."
"Do you honestly think I'm that stupid?"
"CJ, I'm asking this as a favor..."
"Last time you asked for a favor, you went to Toby and made him screw me over. You think I'm going to let you walk in here and try to push me around..."
"I have a sheet." Ann smiled.
"What the..."
"I have a deep dark secret that could ruin any chance you guys have of re-election. If the MS story wasn't bad enough."
"What do you have?"
"Give me the Pressroom for one lousy press conference."
"Why you little..."
"CJ, can I see you for a minute?" Toby asked from the doorway.
"Not now!"
"Yes now." Toby grabbed CJ's arm and led her out in the hall.
"I thought you had a meeting?"
"I do, but Carol got me out because she thought you were killing Ann."
"Well, I am now." CJ turned to go back in.
"Take a walk." Toby grabbed her again.
"What?"
"Whatever it is, walk it off. I'll tell her you had to go see the President about something and you'll be back."
"Toby..."
"Walk."
"Fine, but I don't like it." CJ wined and walked away.
"Ann." Toby walked in. "CJ had to see the President about a thing. She'll be back.
"Really?" Ann stood and shut the door. She looked over at Toby and smiled.
"What?" Toby asked.
"You're looking good these days."
"Don't start with me, Ann. You already upset CJ enough."
"Start what? I was simply saying..."
"What do you have on the President."
"That is between CJ and myself."
"Ann..."
"Fine." She showed him a piece of paper.
"What the hell, Ann!" He shouted. "Isn't it enough that he announced he has MS in the first place? Now you're going to bring up the fact that we were once engaged," he said quieter.
"Oh relax, Toby. I wasn't going to show it to anyone."
"Then why--"
"Just to scare CJ into letting my guys have a press conference."
"You're something else, you know that?" He took a deep breath. "Get out."
"What?"
"Get out!"
"CJ and I have a meeting..."
"It's over now, so leave!"
"I'm gone." She got up and left. Toby sighed and went to find CJ.
