Thank You

He looks over at her as she puts her earrings on.  He can't help but to smile when he thinks about what she said in the limosine in New Hampshire.  'I haven't made up my mind yet, but at the moment, I'm thinking about voting for you.'  Or something along those lines.  She was there for him then, she's there for him now.

Jethro.  What kind of nickname is that anyway?  He smiles as he thinks about the time she called him that; the first time and then the time at her birthday party.  He told her not to call him that.  She said she would anyway and has ever since.

And now she's being corrupted because she helped him stay alive.  She helped him when he was sick.  She cancelled her trip just for him.  And because of that, because she made sure her husband was all right, she is being forced to give up her medical license.  For a year at least; yet she said she was giving it up for their duration in the White House.  And she did it because she loves him.

She can see in her reflection in the mirror.  He is looking at her and smiling.  She smiles back, softly.  Little does he know that behind that smile of hers is fear.  Yet she knows that he'll be okay; he's Josiah Bartlet, President of the United States.  Then again he's stubborn.  She laughs quietly as she thinks about his ego being the size of Montana.

She looks at him again and thinks about last year's State of the Union.  He left that whole section out.  She was so angry she wanted to just--but then she thinks about what he was doing at the same time.  He was announcing that he would run for reelection.  He didn't actually say that, but he didn't have to.  It was written all over his face.  He hadn't even consulted her.

Now he's running again.  She couldn't be more proud of her husband than she is right now.  Even with his debilitating disease, he is able to run the country.

Sure she said that it wasn't a good idea to run again, but she was scared.  What if something happened to him?  She looks at him again.  No, he's strong.  Then she remembers that night that he said, 'Yeah, and I'm gonna win.'  She was so mad.  On the outside she was.  On the inside, she couldn't be happier for him.  They are on the same team; she will always stand by his side.  It was him who made her realize that she had no choice but to give up her medical license.  She'll miss practicing medicine, but she gave it up for a good reason.  And she's looking at that reason in the mirror right now.

He looks up at her and smiles.  'Thank you,' he says quietly to himself, still looking at her.

She turns to face him.  'Thank you,' she says as she walks over to him.

Together, they walk hand in hand out of the Residence and down to the limosine that is waiting outside.  It's time for another appearance.  Silently, as they hold hands, they thank one another for what they have done for each other; for having three happy, healthy daughters.

He takes her hand in his and looks at her.  "Thank you."

She smiles back, "You're welcome."
