Thanks

As they drove to the restaurant, Sam and C.J. were silent for most of the drive. C.J. was beginning to get impatient with the silence, so she broke it. "I knew this would cheer you up. How are you feeling?"

"I'm feeling better," he said, managing to force out a small smile.

Out of everyone C.J. knew Sam was the worst liar. "Sam, you do know that you have a horrible poker face, don't you?" Sam winced. "How are you really feeling?" She asked, glancing at him.

"Okay, maybe I am still a little irate about it."

"Sam, truth. Now." She gave him one of those 'tell me now or else' looks.

"I hate the man, you happy?" Sam said, practically yelling.

C.J. sighed, "Sam, I know you're angry—

"No C.J., you don't know," he said, his voice breaking. "Your father didn't have a twenty-eight year affair. You don't have a father who leads a double life," he said, tears forming in his eyes.

C.J. pulled the car into a nearby parking lot, put the car into park, and turned to Sam. "Tell me then, Sam. You can't keep your feelings inside. If you do, you will probably end up doing something stupid."

"What's there to tell? He's been having an affair for three-quarters of my life. My mother saw the two of them in the house…" His voice trailed off.

Sam looked over at C.J., only to see sympathetic eyes looking over at him. She pulled him into a large embrace. "I'm sorry Sam." She could feel him begin to shake in her arms.

They sat there for several minutes, embracing one another without talking. Sam finally pulled back, tears still in his eyes.

"Thanks, I needed that." He took a deep breath and managed a small smile, only this time it was real.

C.J. smiled back. "You ready to go to dinner now?" She asked as she stared the car back up.

"Yeah, I just have to call Josh and tell him I won't be joining him, Toby, and Donna."

"Okay, let's get going before the restaurant closes."

At the restaurant, C.J. and Sam talked about everything, trying to avoid talking about his father.

"So how did the meeting with the cartographers go?" Sam asked, knowing he'd be amused with the answer.

"Well, I learned that we haven't been living where we thought we lived," she said as Sam nearly choked on his drink to try to keep from laughing. She gave him the look again.

"Really? That's…interesting." He decided to change the subject, "I heard Toby had quite an interesting experience with the WTO protesters."

"Yeah," she said, glad t o see that was Sam nearly back to his old self again.

After the check was paid, the two went back to the White House so Sam could get his car. "I had a nice time tonight, C.J."

"Me too. I'm glad you're feeling better." Sam smiled as she said that.

The rest of the drive was silent.

When they arrived at the White House, Sam made his way over to his car. As he did, he turned around; "I really appreciate you listening to me, C.J. It helped to talk to someone about…you know."

"Hey, no problem. Just don't keep your feelings hidden." She said as they once again embraced. "I'll see you on Monday then."

"Yeah. Goodnight and thanks again." Sam got into his car and drove home, feeling less bitter. C.J. had really helped him. More than she would ever know.
