Thoughts and Words ~ 3

"Sam, what are you doing here?" Ainsley was surprised to see him after the flowers and the voicemail. She wasn't mad at him or anything because she knew that he needed to get away and deal with some stuff that had been bothering him for a couple of days. Ainsley noticed that he was distracted.

"I owe you a date and I'm here to deliver." Sam held out a single stem rose and Ainsley smiled at him.

"Is something on your mind, Sam," she asked, noticing his mind seemed to be wandering.

"Hmm? I'm sorry, what did you say," he asked, snapping back into reality.

"I said, is something bothering you?" She looked into his blue eyes, concerned that something was wrong. When he didn't answer, she gestured for him to come inside and sit down. He did so. 'What is going on with him' she thought to herself. We'll be late for our date, but what the hell. I know he needs to talk about something. He'd never canceled a date on her before. There was something going on.

"Ainsley, you have been such a fixture in my life lately and I know that we are getting serious, but I don't know where to go from here. I don't want to make a commitment now and turn out to be my father." Sam said the painful words.

"Sam, I don't blame you. This relationship has been on the fast track since we got together. Maybe we need to slow down and take some time to figure things out." Ainsley tried to say it gently.

"I don't want to loose you and what we have."

"It's okay. We're not gonna loose each other." she said.

He nodded, "I'm glad to hear you say that." Sam took her hands in his. "Maybe, just for a little while, we should, I don't know, slow it down? I mean, I still want to see you, but--"

"Sam," she said, interrupting him, "I know what you mean. And yes, it's fine, and I think it's probably the best thing for now." She smiled a little. "So I guess we should continue with dinner?"

"What? Oh, right. Let's get going." They walked out to his car and drove to the restaurant.

Dinner at their favorite restaurant was nice, but a little strained because of what they were now both dealing with.

"How is slowing this down gonna work?" Ainsley wanted to prepare herself for what it meant.

"Nothing big. Just dating, no major commitments. I love you."

"Slowing down this relationship isn't gonna hurt it. I think it will only make it better." Ainsley tried to smile at her love and reassure him.

He nodded, "You're right. I'm sure that just slowing things down won't hurt anything," he said nervously. He really did love her, but did she love him?

Ainsley noticed he was staring off into space. "Sam? Hello, earth to Sam?"

"What?" He looked at her. "Oh, sorry."

"What's wrong?"

He sighed, "I am just wondering, I really do love you...Do you feel the same way about me?" He looked closely at her, awaiting her response.
