The Addition ~ 6

CJ decided that since she had only one more briefing that day, that she would go shopping and buy all sorts of new clothes for her daughter-to-be.

She walked to the door and opened it, surprised to see Toby standing there. "Hi. How long have you been there?" She asked, a bit nervous.

"Long enough," he said in a monotone voice. "CJ, what the hell is going on here?"

"Thank you Toby," she said flatly. "Do you always have to go around ruining people's days?"

"I just want to know what is going on with you. Who were you on the phone with just now?"

She sighed and pulled him into her office. She knew she had to tell him. But how? How was she going to tell her best friend, her confidant, that she was going to be doing something like this without him? After a few minutes, she spoke. "Okay. For a while now, I have been thinking about adopting a baby."

He looked at her, shocked. "How long?"

She looked down. "To be honest, for about four years."

"Four years?!" He stood up. "CJ, why didn't you tell me this before?"

"Toby, please," she said softly. "Let me finish, okay?"

He nodded and sat back down.

"Anyway, for a while I have wanted to adopt a baby. But then you came to California to get me to help campaign, and the whole thing just sort of drifted away. Only, I've been thinking about it for so long. I just never did anything about it until I saw this thing on the news...Toby, there are so many kids out there whose mothers have abandoned them." She took a tissue and wiped her eyes.

"CJ, you know that you can't save every hungry child out there, don't you," he said softly as he moved closer to her.

"I know that, Toby. But I thought, what if I could help just one child. Just one. So I picked up the phone and asked about this one children's home that's in D.C. I went over there numerous times and fell in love with this one little girl. From the second I saw her, I knew that I wanted to adopt her. She is so shy...her mother left her there when she was only two months old. She left her to go be with some boyfriend or something." She sighed. "Anyway, this little girl...she's so sweet. She has this smile that just captivates you." CJ couldn't help but to smile a little.

"What's her name," Toby asked.

"Madeline. She...She doesn't have a last name. The mother never left that piece of information."

"Is this her," he asked, taking a picture off of the shelf.

"Yeah. The director of the home gave that to me the first time I went there."

He smiled softly. "She's beautiful."

"Yeah, she is."

"So when are you going to adopt her?"

"Well, I just got off the phone with the director...as you probably heard from outside the door, and he told me that I can pick her up next week. All I have to do is go and sign the papers."

"Want me to go with you?"

She looked at him and smiled. "Thanks, but she's so shy. I think that if I were to go alone, it would be easier..."

He nodded. "I understand."

"Thank you."

"There's just one more thing," he said as he stood up.

"What's that?" She stood as well.

"What are you going to tell Sam, Josh, Leo, and the President?"

CJ's eyes went wide. "Oh my G-d! I forgot about that!" She sat back down. "What am I going to do?"

"Relax, CJ. Just tell them that you need to speak to all of them or something and tell them then."

She nodded, "Yeah. That sounds like a good idea." She tried to smile, but inside, she knew this was going to be very difficult. What exactly was she going to say to them?
