The Addition ~ 5

Once home, CJ noticed that she had three messages on her answering machine. She pushed the play button and listened to each one.

::BEEP:: "CJ, it's Sam. Um...I just wanted to see how you were feeling, or if you needed anything. I'm here, as you probably already knew...Okay. I guess I'll talk to you later. Bye." ::BEEP::

She rolled her eyes and listened to the next one.

::BEEP:: "Hey, CJ. It's Josh. Toby told me to call--Ouch! Toby don't hit me!--Uh, anyway, I'm calling because I'm worried about you. I guess. I'm gonna hang up now, in fear of being hit by Toby again. Bye." ::BEEP::

She couldn't help but to laugh at Josh's message. She listened to the final message.

::BEEP:: "CJ, it's Toby. Where are you?! What is going on? Call me the instant you hear this message. If you don't...I'll have no choice but to come over to your place and confront you. Talk to you later." ::BEEP::

"Toby, Toby, Toby," she said to herself. She decided to call him since she didn't feel like having him come over and confront her with a hundred questions as to her whereabouts. She picked up the phone and dialed his number.

"CJ?"

"Toby, how did you know it was me?"

"I've been sitting by the phone all day waiting for you to call me. Where on earth have you been?!" He yelled.

"First of all, I'm fine, thank you so much for asking. Secondly, I don't think it's any of your business as to where I was. I'm fine, isn't that enough?"

He took a deep breath. "CJ, it's just that you've been in a strange mood for quite some time, and to be frank, we're worried about you."

"Aw, the three stooges are worried about me," she said sarcastically.

"CJ..."

"Look, Toby thank you for caring, but I'm fine, really."

"Yeah, okay," he said quietly. All he wanted to know was what had been going on with her. Was that too much to ask? Apparently according to her, yes, it was.

"Look, I'll see you on Monday, alright?"

"Okay. Talk to you later." He hung up the phone.

CJ hung up the phone as well and sat down. She wanted to tell him. She wanted to tell all of them. But how? How was she going to tell her friends that she was trying to adopt a two year old girl?

ONE WEEK LATER

She sat in the staff meeting, not really listening to what Leo was saying. She kept thinking about the phone call she was supposed to receive today.

"CJ, I need you to brief the press on what the President's plans are for the bill that was just passed." He looked at her, awaiting a response. "CJ?"

"Hmm?" She looked up at him and saw everyone in the room staring at her. "Oh, yeah...okay." She smiled weakly.

"Okay, so is that all?" Leo asked the group.

"I think so," Toby said, looking at CJ. What was going on with her? She was so paranoid during the past week.

"Great. Get back to work." Everyone stood up and began walking to their offices.

CJ walked to her office at a quicker pace than usual. She had to know. Did they leave a message for her? She gathered her messages that Carol gave her and looked through each one. She then smiled. Finally. They had called her. "Thanks, Carol." She walked into her office and closed the door.

Toby, who had been following her, waited by the door, trying to think of something to say. He couldn't help but overhear her on the phone with someone.

"That's wonderful, thank you so much," CJ said, beaming. She couldn't believe it was actually happening. "So when is a good time for me to come get her?" She listened carefully and wrote down on a piece of paper when to pick her up. "Great, thank you so much. I can't tell you how much this means to me...I'm so glad she does...Yes, I'll make sure to do that. Thank you!" She hung up the phone and and sat in her chair and smiled. "I'm going to be a mother," she said out loud to herself.

Toby's jaw was practically wide open. Did he just hear what he thought he heard? CJ was going to be a mother? He just stood there, not knowing what to say or do.
