The Addition ~ 4
The drive down to the children's home seemed to take forever. She couldn't wait to go and see her. As soon as she found a parking spot, CJ got out of her car and walked as fast as she could into the building. She walked up to the receptionist's desk. "Hello, I'm Claudia Jean Cregg. I believe I have an appointment to see Daniel White?"
"Yes, ma'am," the woman said. "Please follow me." She led her to an office. "Mr. White?"
"Yes?"
"There's a woman here to see you...A Claudia Jean Cregg?"
"Ah good. Send her in."
CJ walked into the office. "Hello Mr. White," she said as she shook his hand.
"Please, call me Daniel," he said as he smiled. "Please, sit down."
"Thank you." She sat in the chair on the other side of his desk.
"So, are you ready to meet her?" He asked with a smile.
"I've been ready to meet her for quite some time now," she said, smiling back.
"Well, great. I just have to make sure she's awake. I need you to fill out these forms...It's customary."
"I understand."
"I'll be back in a minute." He said as he walked out of the office.
CJ began to fill out the form. She couldn't stop smiling to herself as she did so.
"Are you ready?" Daniel asked from the doorway, causing CJ to jump up.
"Yes, I am." She stood up and walked down the hall to a room.
"Now, she's very shy," Daniel said as he opened the door. "So you want to be, you know, super nice. Which I'm sure you are." He smiled and walked into the room, signaling for CJ to follow him. "Madeline," he said in a soft voice. The little girl looked up at Daniel and smiled. "This," he said gesturing to CJ, "is someone I want you to meet." Immediately the two year old looked as if she was going to start crying. She looked up at Daniel, who picked her up.
"May I try?" CJ asked.
"Of course," Daniel said. He turned to Madeline. "I'm going to be right over here." He set her down where she was.
CJ knelt down beside Madeline and smiled softly. "Hi there, Madeline. I'm CJ. It's nice to meet you," she said gently.
The little girl looked up at CJ and very quietly said, "Hi." She smiled a little.
CJ smiled. "What are you playing with? Oh, legos, huh? I used to play with these when I was little."
Daniel watched the two for a while. He could tell that this was going to work out perfectly, both for Madeline and for CJ.
THE WHITE HOUSE
"Toby what are we doing here on a Saturday?" Josh whined as he walked into the Communications bullpen.
"Shut up and sit down," Toby ordered. Josh sat down. "Anyway, as I was saying, we need to get to the bottom of this."
"Bottom of what?" Josh asked, causing Sam and Toby to look over at him. "What? I just got here."
"We need to find out what CJ's up to," Sam said.
"How do you know she's up to something?"
"Josh, did you wake up on the stupid side of the bed this morning," Toby asked, very annoyed.
"Sorry, I just don't see why we can't just ask her what's going on."
"Because she won't tell us what's going on." Toby and Sam said at the same time.
"Okay, stop doing that," Toby said to Sam.
"Yeah."
"I think we should try calling her," Josh said. "Maybe she's feeling a little better?"
"I called her this morning. Her phone was off the hook. So I paged her. Something's up, and it's big."
CHILDREN'S HOME
"Thank you so much for letting me come see her," CJ said as she and Daniel left the room.
"It was my pleasure, CJ. I think she really likes you."
"Yeah?" She smiled.
"Yeah. Well, we have your phone number. We'll be getting back to you in a week at most."
"Okay, great. Thank you so much." She shook his hand and left the building. She couldn't seem to stop smiling. Was this really going to work out in her favor? Was she going to be able to do this? She drove home, thinking about only the future and what she was hoping would happen.
