The Addition ~ 22
The day went by quickly. Maddie seemed to be feeling better. Her fever had gone down considerably and she was able to eat...a little.
"So," Toby said as he helped CJ clean the dishes from dinner, "Do you think you're going to come into work tomorrow?"
She sighed, "I'm not sure yet. Most likely yes because number one, I miss it believe it or not, and number two, we have to tell them." She looked at him.
"I know, I'm just not sure how to yet."
"Me neither." She set the last plate in the dishwasher and sat down at the table. "Maybe we can just tell them the truth?"
"The truth never hurt," he said as he sat down next to her.
"I'm going to go check on her," CJ said as she got up and went into Maddie's room. "How are we doing," CJ asked as she picked Maddie up.
"Good!" Maddie smiled and yawned.
"Getting tired are we?"
She shook her head no.
"Well, I think Dada can tuck you in tonight, what do you say?"
She thought for a moment. "No bed!"
"Yes bed," CJ said. "Let's get you changed into your princess pajamas.
"No bed!" Maddie said again, crossing her arms.
Toby then walked into the room. "What's this I hear about no bed?"
"She doesn't want to go to bed," CJ said.
"Oh, you don't want to have good dreams about things you love?"
"No." She shook her head.
"You're going to make mommy and me very sad if you don't go to bed," he said as he pretending to look as if he was going to cry.
"No feel sad," she said as she wiggled out of CJ's arms and walked over to Toby.
"Does that mean you'll go to bed," he asked, kneeling down.
"Okay. Wead?"
"How about we read to you once we change you into your pajamas," CJ said.
"Okay!" She said excitedly. "Help, please." She held up her pajamas.
"Here, I'll help her while you go get her medicine," Toby said.
"Okay." She walked to Maddie and put her pajamas on. "There, now you look like a beautiful princess." She kissed her forehead.
Maddie blushed. "I a pwincess?"
"Yes, you are a princess." She smiled.
"Okay," Toby said, walking into the room with Maddie's medicine. "Maddie, it's time to take your medicine."
She shook her head. "Icky."
"It'll make you feel better though." He walked over to her and helped her to take the medicine. "There, all done."
"Done! Now wead."
"What do we say," CJ said, smiling. She had never seen this side of Toby before. He was turning into a real father figure.
"Um..." Maddie thought for a moment. "Pwease?"
"Sounds like we have a winner," Toby said. "Come here, I'll read to you."
She got up on to Toby's lap and looked at the pictures as he read to her.
CJ sat down on the bed and watched as Toby read to Maddie, who started to fall asleep in his lap.
"'...That's all there is, there isn't anymore,'" he said, finishing the book. He looked at her. "Well, she seemed to have followed the book there." He smiled and carefully picked her up and laid her down on her bed and covered her up. "Goodnight princess," he said as he kissed her forehead.
CJ then kissed Maddie's forehead. "I love you," she said quietly to Maddie.
The two then walked out of the room.
NEXT MORNING
"Okay," Leo said. "Is there anything else?"
"What do I need to know for the briefings," CJ asked from the doorway.
All four men looked up and saw her. "Welcome back," Sam said. "How's Maddie feeling?"
"Much better, thanks for asking."
"Glad to see you back," Josh said. "It's been rather boring without you."
"I'm sure it has." She looked at Leo who looked at her left hand.
"CJ, what is that?" He asked, pointing to her hand.
"Oh this?" She smiled and walked over to Toby. "Um, we have something that we need to tell you," CJ said, smiling as she took Toby's hand.
"I wonder what that could be," Sam said.
"We're engaged," Toby finally blurted out after a few moments of silence.
"Wow...congratulations," Josh said. "That was...fast."
"Shut up, Joshua," CJ said, teasingly.
"What was that that I heard about someone being engaged," the President asked from the doorway as everyone stood.
"CJ and I are engaged, sir."
He smiled a the two. "It's about time you asked her," Jed said as he walked over to CJ. "Congratulations, both of you. What kind of wedding are you having?"
Just a small one...family and friends," Toby said.
"When are you having it?"
"We haven't decided on a date yet, sir," CJ said.
"Well, congratulations and please, let me know if I can help in any way. Or you can ask Abbey."
"Thank you sir," the two said at the same time.
"Okay," Leo said once Jed stopped talking. "Anything else?"
No one said anything.
"Okay then, back to work."
Sam, Josh, CJ, and Toby walked out of the office. "Look at them, Leo. They were made for each other," Jed said as he watched the two walk down the hall, hand in hand.
