The Addition ~ 20
They had stayed up most of the night, taking care of Maddie who had gotten sick five more times. Toby hadn't left at all. He stayed with CJ and helped her take care of Maddie.
CJ woke up the next morning and looked over at Toby who was in the rocking chair, holding a sleeping Maddie. She had her head on his chest and her arm around him. CJ couldn't help but to smile. This was a side of Toby Ziegler she had never seen before. She got a blanket from the closet and covered the two up and walked out of the room and into the kitchen.
WHITE HOUSE
"Leo?" Margaret said from his doorway.
"Yeah?" He said, not looking up from the papers he was reading.
"CJ's on the phone. She needs to talk to you."
"Okay, thanks." He picked up the phone. "CJ?"
"Hi Leo," she said with a yawn.
"Hi, what's going on?"
"Maddie got a little sick last night, so I'm not going to be able to come in today. Sorry." She waited for him to start yelling.
"Okay, that's no problem. I'll just have Simon do your job again."
"Thanks. Oh, and Toby's not going to be able to come in."
Leo put his papers down. "Why not?"
She paused. How was she going to tell Leo that Toby had stayed over? "He brought me dinner, and then when Maddie got sick, he stayed and helped me. Leo, he was up all night with her...We both were."
"Okay. Just tell him that his meeting with some Leukemia guy has been taken care of."
"Alright. Thanks, Leo. I'll hopefully be back tomorrow."
"Yeah...Tell her to feel better."
She smiled. "I will." She then hung up the phone and walked back into Maddie's room. She saw Toby had woken up. "Morning," she said.
"Hey. How long have you been up?"
"I just got up a few minutes ago."
He nodded and looked at his watch. "Oh great. I've got to go. I'm late."
She laughed, "'No time to say hello, goodbye, I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!'"
"What?" He asked, confused.
"Oh please, haven't you ever seen 'Alice in Wonderland?'"
"Maybe...When I was four. Anyway, it's 7:30 and we...I have staff in fifteen minutes."
She shook her head. "I just called Leo. You're fine. I told him you were up all night helping me take care of Maddie."
He looked surprised, "And he said that was okay?"
"Yep. You're out of the woods."
Maddie then started to stir and opened her eyes and looked at CJ. "Mama?" She said in a rather scratchy voice.
"Hi sweetie," CJ said as she gently picked her up. "You feel any better?"
"Twoat."
"What was that," Toby asked.
"I think she said 'throat.'"
"Ah. Should I go get the medicine?"
"Um...I don't know if we should have her swallow anything yet."
He stood up, "Good point. Yet I think she should suck on some ice or something, just so she doesn't get dehydrated."
"Okay."
"I'll go get it." He walked out of the room.
"Toby's going to get you some nice cool ice. You can have that to make your throat better, okay?"
She nodded.
"You look flushed again," CJ said as she felt her forehead. "Oh great. Are you hot honey?"
Maddie nodded again.
"Okay. Let's put a t-shirt on you. Which one do you want to wear? Cinderella or Snow White?"
"Cindewella."
"Okay." CJ took off the long sleeve pajamas and put the Cinderella shirt on Maddie as well as a pair of pants. "There we go. Is that better?"
"Yes."
"Good." CJ kissed her forehead as Toby walked back into the room with a cup in his hand.
"Ah, so we've turned princess, have we?" He smiled. "You look quite lovely."
Maddie smiled shyly.
"Toby, will you help me find the thermometer?"
"Yeah...Is she warm again?"
"Try hot."
"Okay. When did you last take her temperature?"
She thought for a moment. "Sometime before you came over yesterday."
"Your bathroom maybe?"
"I can go check."
"No no. You stay here and give her the ice. I'll find it." He handed her the cup of ice.
"Okay. It's the ear thermometer."
"Got it." He left the room again.
CJ took a piece of ice out of the cup. "Here sweetie, this is kind of like water...Only colder." She put it in Maddie's mouth, yet still held on to it so she would accidentally swallow the ice cube.
Toby came back a couple minutes later. "Here we are. How do you work it?"
"You've never used one of these before?"
"Uh...no. I use the kind you put under your tongue and when it's finished, it beeps."
"That is so 1990s." She laughed softly. "You just turn it on, like so, and put it in the person's ear for about two or three seconds." CJ put it in Maddie's ear and took her temperature. "Hmm."
"What is it?"
"102.1." She turned it off.
"That's probably from the stomach flu that she seems to have."
"Yeah."
"How long has it been since she hasn't gotten sick?"
She thought for a moment. "Well, I woke up at 7:20 and I think she finally stopped at 5:30...Or that was the last time at least."
"Okay, so two hours. You think it's taken its course?"
"Maybe...But remember from midnight to 2:00am we said the same thing and a few minutes later..."
"True."
"I guess we'll wait and see."
"Okay." He looked at Maddie. "Is that good ice?"
She nodded and reached out for him. "Dada."
CJ and Toby looked at each other, shocked.
