The Addition ~ 19

Toby continued to hold Maddie as she cried from her sore throat. "Should I go get her some water," he asked over the crying.

"I'll get it as soon as I finish putting the cream away." CJ said, trying to stay as organized as possible.

"Okay." He sat down in the rocking chair in the room and put Maddie on his lap. "You know what I used to love to do to my niece," he asked Maddie as she started to settle down.

She looked up at him and shook her head no.

"I used to...tickle her." He started to tickle her gently so that she wouldn't laugh too hard.

She looked up at him again and giggled. "You funny," she said as she pointed to him.

"I am? Impossible. Do you know this? 'This little piggy went to market...'" He said, playing with her feet.

CJ watched him through the doorway. He was a natural. "Hey, here's the water," she said walking into the room.

"Great, thanks." He took the cup from CJ. "Do you want some water?"

"Yes please," she said quietly.

"Okay." He helped her sip the water. "Better?" She nodded.

"Wead?" She asked.

"Sure," CJ said. "Which book would you like to read?"

Toby set her down so she could go pick out a book. "Dis." She said pointing to one.

"One of my favorites," Toby said.

CJ started laughing. "You like Green Eggs and Ham?"

"My father used to read it to me," he said, defending himself. "Come here, Maddie," he said as he pulled her back up on his lap.

"Wead now?"

"Yes, I'll read now." He opened the book and began to read to her.

"I'm going to get her some more water," CJ said as she picked up the cup. She looked at the two and smiled. She then walked into the kitchen and got more water.

"'...Would you eat them in a house? Would eat them with a mouse?'" Toby continued as CJ walked back into the room. "'...I do not like them Sam I Am, I do not like Green Eggs and Ham...'"

Maddie laughed. "You eat gween eggs."

CJ laughed. "Yeah, he probably does eat green eggs," she said.

"I do not!" He looked at Maddie. "Don't listen to her, Maddie. She only tells lies."

"Hey, I do not. Maddie, he isn't telling the truth."

She simply looked back and forth between CJ and Toby and smiled. She then yawned.

"I think the medicine is kicking in," Toby said as Maddie put her head on Toby's chest.

"Yeah. I'll get her bed ready."

"No bed!"

"Don't you want to have fun dreams about green eggs and ham?" Toby asked.

She shook her head. She looked up at CJ and Toby. "Tummy ache..."

"Uh oh," Toby said. "Should we take her anywhere...Or what?"

"Mama, tummy ache," she said again with tears in her eyes.

"Come here," Maddie," Toby said as he got up, still holding her. He got as far as the hallway when she got sick...on both the floor and Toby.

"Oh Toby, I'm so sorry," CJ said, grabbing cloths and giving them to him.

Maddie began to cry again.

"Let's get her to the bathroom at least," he said calmly as if nothing had happened.

"Okay. Do you want me to take her so you can, I don't know...put your shirt in the laundry or something?"

"Do you still have that shirt I left her once?"

"Yeah...in the closet," she said as she took Maddie and brought her into the bathroom. "It's okay sweetie. Do you feel a little better now?" CJ asked as she wiped off Maddie's face.

She shook her head and once again got sick only she missed the floor since CJ had the garbage can right next to her. She rubbed Maddie's back. Maddie then started crying once again. "I sowwy," she cried.

"Shh, it's okay honey," CJ said, pulling her close. "It's okay," she said again, this time quietly.

"Okay," Toby said, walking into the bathroom. "How is she?"

"She got sick again. Toby, what if it turned into the stomach flu?"

"Then it turned into the stomach flu. Let's get her some clean clothes."

"Yeah...Um...will you watch her while I get..."

"Go," he said, taking Maddie. He set her in his lap. "Feeling better now," he asked as he brushed her hair out of her face.

She nodded. "I sowwy."

"No, don't be sorry, it's okay." He kissed her head.

"Here we go," CJ said, bringing in a clean pair of pajamas.

"Okay." Toby took off Maddie's clothes and put her pajamas on her. "There, is that better," he asked her.

"Dolly," was her response.

"I think she wants her doll," Toby said.

"Yeah, I'll get it." CJ went and got the Madeline doll. "Here we are," she said as she brought the Madeline doll in.

"Mama," Maddie said, reaching for CJ.

CJ picked Maddie up from Toby's arms. "What is it honey?"

Maddie simply put her arms around CJ.

"Maybe we should try putting her to bed," Toby suggested.

"We can try. I'm just afraid that she'll get sick again and she won't know what to do."

"I can sit with her for a while if you want," he said.

"How about we both sit with her?"

He nodded, "Okay, that'll work too."

CJ walked into Maddie's room and gently set the little girl who was slowly falling asleep on her bed. CJ covered her up with her blankets and sat down next to her.

"CJ," Toby said quietly.

"Hmm?"

"Here, sit in the chair. I'll get one from the kitchen or something."

"Okay." She pulled the chair closer to Maddie's bed.

Toby came in with another chair a couple of minutes later and sat down with CJ. He took her hand. "She'll be okay. She has the best mother in the world taking care of her."

She turned to him. "Not to mention the best surrogate father..."

He smiled and continued to watch as Maddie fell asleep.
