The Addition ~ 18

Toby looked at the picture for a few more minutes then put it back into his desk. He looked at his watch. It was only 11:00am. He sighed and got back to work.

CJ'S APARTMENT

"There we go, is that better," CJ asked Maddie as she applied the cream to her rash.

Maddie nodded and smiled a little. She held up her Madeline book. "Wead?"

She smiled. "Of course. Let's go into the living room, okay?" Maddie nodded again and raised her arms up for CJ to pick her up.

CJ sat Maddie down in her lap and opened the book, opening only the front cover. She saw that there was a little note in it. She read it, "'To my dearest Rebecca, may you always cherish the life you will lead. Love, Daddy.'"

She looked up from the book, trying to remember how she knew the name Rebecca. When had she heard Toby mention a Rebecca? Then she remembered. "Oh, Toby," she said softly to herself.

"Mama wead?" Maddie asked.

"Yeah, let's read." She smiled and read the book to her.

WHITE HOUSE

He couldn't keep his mind on his work. Why did Andi bring that up? He tried as best he could to get it out of his head, but nothing was working. He kept on thinking about it.

*****FLASHBACK******
TOBY AND ANDI'S HOME

"Toby, where did you put the medicine?" Andi asked from the closet.

"It's in her bag already. Remember I said that I would put it in there last night?"

"Oh...right." She smiled and walked over to him. "I really hope it works this time."

"Me too," he said as he hugged her. "We just have to keep praying, right?"

"Yeah," she said softly.

He sighed. "Ready to go?"

"As ready as I'll ever be."

"Okay." He took her hand and they walked into her room, picked her up, and drove to the hospital.

"Well, how does it look," Toby asked, holding onto Andi's hand.

The doctor sighed. "I'm sorry, but it has spread to a few of the major organs--"

"No!" Andi cried. "Please, tell me that you have the wrong child!"

"I'm sorry," the doctor said sympathetically.

"Is there anything you can do," Toby asked, his voice beginning to break.

"If we did operate, she would only have a 20% chance of a recovery. Even then she would be unable to walk, talk, eat on her own..." He paused. "It's better this way."

"Thank you," Toby said, barely audible.

The doctor left the room so the three of them could be alone.

"This isn't fair," Andi said as she sat down next to the little girl. "Why did this have to happen?" She looked up at Toby who sat beside her.

"Sometimes G-d wants to bring his children back to heaven a little early...to watch over other little girls and boys who are in the process of leading a better life."

She looked up at him, "Yeah, I guess."

"Mama? Daddy?" The little girl said, waking up.

"Yes, we're here, Rebecca," Toby said.

"Daddy." She smiled.

"What is it sweetie?"

"I feel real tired," the three year old said.

Toby closed his eyes and tried not to cry. "If you feel tired...it's okay to go to sleep," he said, taking Andi's hand.

"Yeah...it's okay to go night-night." Andi wiped her eyes.

"Why are you sad?" She asked her mother.

"Sometimes mommies get sad," she said.

"I want to go home," Rebecca said.

"Can we do that?" Toby asked.

"I'll get a doctor."

BACK HOME

"Okay, lay down," Toby said with great difficulty.

"Will you read to me?" She asked, holding out her book.

He looked at Andi who nodded. "Okay...'In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines...'"

As he read she drifted off to sleep..."'That's all there is, there isn't anymore.'" He closed the book and looked at Rebecca and then at Andi. "It's okay," he said, holding on to her. "It's okay." He then began to cry, as did Andi.

*****PRESENT DAY*****

She opened the door and saw Toby standing there with dinner. "Hey, come on in."

He did so. "How was your day?"

"More hectic than when I'm working." She smiled a little. "She's asleep right now."

"Okay...We should probably wait to eat then."

"Yeah, it wouldn't hurt. Besides, I want to talk to you about something."

"Okay." He sat down on the couch.

She sighed. "I was opening the book to read to Maddie and saw this." She showed him the note.

He nodded. "I've been thinking about that all day."

"Toby...Is that why you were acting so...Different?"

He looked at her, "To be honest, yeah. I was trying to make the pain go away, but it's going to be ten years in two weeks," he said softly. "Andi came to see me today about a meeting I forgot to go to."

"Forgot or didn't want to?"

He looked down. CJ took his hand.

"It's okay," she said. "It's okay to be sad Toby."

"That's not it...I mean, that's part of it...I was afraid that if I was too protective of her that..." He couldn't continue.

She pulled him into a hug then looked at him. "Toby, caring about Maddie isn't going to make her sicker. It'll make her feel better. She isn't going to..."

"I know, it just feels like that sometimes."

"It's going to be okay," she said, holding him.

"Yeah," he said as he looked at her. "Thank you."

Maddie then began to cry. CJ sighed and stood up. "Want to help me?"

"Sure." He smiled softly and got up as well and walked with her to Maddie's bedroom.
