The Addition ~ 17

CJ didn't get much, if any sleep at all that entire night. Maddie had woken up several times, either from coughing, her sore throat, or because she was hot. Finally, at 4:00am, she got her to sleep.

The ringing phone at 7:30 woke CJ up. She made a mad dash for it, so to not wake up a still sleeping Maddie. "Hello," she answered softly.

"CJ? Are you okay," Toby whispered on the other end.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just got her to sleep about two and a half hours ago...no wait, three and a half."

"Oh. I didn't wake you, did I?" He asked, still whispering.

"No, I needed to get up anyway."

"CJ?"

"Yeah?"

"Why exactly are we whispering?" He asked.

"Well I don't know why you are, but I am so I don't wake Maddie up."

"So that means I don't have to whisper," he asked, talking in his normal voice.

She laughed, "Yeah, you can talk in your normal mumbling voice."

"I don't mumble."

"Yeah, right."

He sighed, knowing he wouldn't win this. "Okay, whatever. So did you still want me to come over this evening, or is Maddie not feeling well?"

"She'll probably feel a little better as the day goes on," she said as she heard Maddie begin to wake up. "Toby, she's starting to wake up. I had better go."

"Okay. Do me a favor, will you?"

"What's that?"

"Tell her that I love her?"

She smiled, "You can do that tonight, but I'll tell her anyway." She had to wipe a few tears from her eyes. Was this the same Toby who just yesterday afternoon was being a complete jerk?

"Thank you. I had better go, since Josh is starting to bug the hell out of me."

"Okay, I'll see you later."

"Bye CJ." He hung up.

"Bye," she said as she hung up as well. She then went into Maddie's room.

"Josh, you couldn't wait five more minutes?" Toby asked, annoyed.

"Well I could, but then I wouldn't be able to tear you to shreds." He said seriously.

"What? Why?" Toby asked, confused.

"Why do you have to treat CJ like she's...nothing? She is an independent woman, raising a child by herself for crying out loud!"

"Josh--"

"No, you listen to me. She deserves some respect!"

"JOSH!" Toby yelled.

"What?"

"I was just on the phone with her you moron. We made up last night."

"Oh..." Josh sat down. "Why didn't you say anything?"

"Maybe because you were too busy ranting and raving that you didn't hear me?"

"Yeah, whatever."

"So what did you need?"

Josh thought for a moment. What did he need? He came in there to pretty much pounce on Toby. "Uh...I don't remember exactly. I'll come back when I do." He walked out of the office.

Toby shook his head and started reading a draft Sam had written.

"So you came to your senses, huh?" Sam asked, walking in.

Toby looked up, "Yeah...I guess you could say that...thanks."

"Anytime. So did she forgive you?"

"Not that it's any of your business, but yes, she did forgive me." He smiled softly.

"So that means you're in a good mood right now?"

"What did you do," Toby deadpanned.

"What makes you think I did anything?"

"You just asked if I was in a good mood. What did you do?"

"Well, I didn't really do anything, it's more of who I ran into..."

"Who did you run into?"

"Let me just say that it was completely her fault. She ran into me, causing her coffee to spill on her shirt."

"Sam, what in the world are you talking about?"

"I sort of literally ran into..."

Toby put his hands over his face. "You didn't."

"I did."

"What sort of mood is she in?"

"The sort of mood where I would like to kill you right now," a very irate Andi said, walking into Toby's office.

Toby banged his head on his desk repeatedly.

"Toby, you'll want to be conscious when you hear what I have to say," Andi said, arms crossed.

"She's right, Toby."

"Go to your office, Sam!" She yelled.

"Okay," he said in a tiny voice. He ran out of the office.

She turned back to Toby. "So, why didn't you tell me about that meeting you had with Dr. Reilly?"

"What meeting with Dr. Reilly?" He asked, confused.

"Exactly! You were supposed to meet with him to talk about the Leukemia thing! He walked into my office this morning and said you never showed up."

"I was busy..."

She rolled her eyes. "Is that the best you can do?"

"Um...yes?"

"Fine." She stood up and turned around to face Toby once more. "Oh and Toby?"

"Yeah?"

"Give CJ's daughter the love that you gave to..."

"Yeah, I will, I promise."

She nodded, "Thank you."

"Welcome."

She smiled softly and left the office.

Toby sat down at his desk and opened the top drawer and took out a picture and looked at it. He took a tissue and wiped the threatening tears.
