The Addition ~ 16
CJ carried a sleeping Maddie up the stairs to her apartment and unlocked the door. She put her briefcase down before closing it and walked into Maddie's room where she laid the peacefully sleeping little girl on her bed. She couldn't seem to make herself get up or leave her side. She watched as Maddie slept, holding her tiger and Madeline doll.
The knocking at the door got CJ's attention. She looked at the clock. 7:30. It seemed so much later for some reason. CJ quietly walked out of Maddie's room and walked to the door and opened it.
"Toby?!" She said, surprised.
"Hi," he said quietly. "May I come in?"
She sighed. "I guess, but only if you promise to not start some stupid fight."
"I promise." He put his right hand in the air.
"Okay." She opened the door all the way so he could come inside. "So what did you want to talk to me about?"
"I wanted to say...I thought I would...apologize." He looked at her.
"For?"
"For being a complete jerk and for only thinking about myself." He felt like a little kid when he said that.
She nodded, "Okay. Thank you."
"Does this mean you forgive me?" He asked hopeful.
"I'm not sure yet." She motioned for him to sit down on the sofa. "Toby, why exactly did you say the things you said?"
"I don't know...I guess I'm just not used to having anyone except one person in my life, and I never envisioned a child being a part of my life."
"So you threw a tantrum because you were jealous that I was taking care of someone other than yourself?" She looked at him. "Toby, don't you know that I have always cared for you? Don't you know that I always will care for you?"
He looked up at her. "I guess, but it was just...I don't know...weird."
"Look, I know I've been spending a lot of time with Maddie lately, but that's what a parent does. They spend time with their children, they get to know them. It's just like what people do when they first start dating, in a way."
"Yeah, I guess you're right."
"I guess I am." She smiled a little.
"So, truce?" He held out his hand.
"Truce." She kissed him instead.
He smiled. "Well...okay."
"Tell me, what made you come over here?"
"Let's see, it was sometime after you left the White House, after Sam yelled at me for the second time, after Josh tried to kill me...literally, after Leo gave me some ground rules for how to make a relationship work, and of course, after a very firm lecture from the President." He paused. "But I knew I was wrong last night...I guess I was just too proud to say or do anything about it, and I'm sorry CJ. I'm sorry for the way I behaved towards you, for yelling, for everything."
"Wow. Josh tried to kill you?"
"Well, he pushed me up against the wall and threatened to until the Secret Service peeled him off me."
She laughed. "I can somehow see that happening."
"Yeah...So how's she feeling?"
"Well she's asleep, finally. Nearly the entire car ride home she was crying, mostly because her throat hurt so much."
"I really have to commend you on what you did." He said as he took her hand.
"Oh?" She smiled a little.
"Yeah, you are so good with her. It had never really occurred to me that you're the first real mother that she has ever had. I mean, her birth mother left her on the doorstep of that place when she was so young."
"I guess in a way I am," she said, smiling.
"And you're doing a great job so far."
"Are you trying to score here or something?"
"CJ! There's a two year old child sleeping in the room next door. I don't think that language is very appropriate for her. Do you?"
"My, my, my. You have come a long way in just a few hours."
"I've had some time to think about it."
"I can tell."
"Would it be alright if I...you know...said goodnight to her?"
"Yeah, I'm sure she'd like that a lot." She smiled and got up with him and walked into Maddie's room.
"She looks so peaceful," he whispered.
"Yeah, and look what's she's holding."
He smiled. "Does she ever let go of that doll?"
"Only when she takes a bath. She doesn't want to get her wet."
Toby laughed a little and walked to Maddie's bedside and pulled the covers up to her neck and kissed her goodnight. He then walked back over to CJ. "She really is an angel, isn't she?"
"Yeah, she is."
They exited the room and walked back out into the living room. "So how long are you going to be staying home with her?"
"At least tomorrow, maybe the next day. It depends on how low her fever goes. I don't want to expose my neighbor to it."
"So what is 'it' that she has?"
"Scarlet Fever."
He made a face. "That sounds really bad."
"Well, the doctor said that it's basically strep throat with a rash and a high fever."
"A rash? So she'll be scratching herself a lot."
"Nope. I went out and bought some cream for her."
He smiled, "You really are prepared. I'm impressed."
"Why thank you, Toby." She smiled.
"You're welcome." He looked at his watch. "Well, I had better get going. I promised the President I'd have a speech typed up for him by 9:30 tonight and so far it's only half done."
"Ah, well you had better go and finish writing it then."
"I plan on doing that."
"Good." She smiled and kissed him again. "Thank you for coming. It really meant a lot to me."
"I'm glad I did. Now Josh can't kill me."
She laughed. "Yeah, he'll have me to deal with if he tries."
He picked his coat up and walked over to the door. "How about tomorrow evening, I come over and the three of us have dinner. Take out or something. How does that sound?"
"Sounds good to me."
"Great. I'll call during the day to tell you when I'll be getting out of there."
"Okay."
"Night CJ." He smiled at her and walked out the door.
"Night," she said as she watched him walk down the hall. She closed the door.
"Mama!" Maddie cried.
"Coming, sweetie," she said, grabbing the cream. She walked into Maddie's room and took care of her, kissed her goodnight, and turned off the light.
She then walked to her own room, smiling. She knew that he would have to come to his senses one day. She was just glad it was today. She slipped into her pajamas and went to sleep.
