The Addition ~ 13

RESTAURANT

They were sitting in a secluded area of the restaurant, exchanging glances, talking about everything, and most importantly, enjoying each other's company.

"Do you think she's alright," CJ asked for what seemed like the hundredth time.

"CJ, she's fine. She's in good hands. We both know Carol. Trust me, she's fine." He placed his hand on top of hers.

"Maybe I should go call--"

"CJ..."

She sighed, "I just want to make sure she's okay. I don't want her to think I'm never coming back."

"She knows that you're coming back, don't worry," he said gently.

"Yeah, you're right," she said, still unsure of herself.

CAROL'S APARTMENT

The crying of Maddie took Carol's attention away from her book. "Hey there," she said, picking the two year old up, "What's wrong?" She then felt her forehead. "Oh my. You're burning up." Carol gently laid Maddie on the bed and took her top layer of clothes off so that she was in only her undershirt and diaper/pull-ups.

"I'm going to get something for your head, okay sweetie?" Maddie's response was more crying. "Shh, it's okay, don't be scared," Carol said quietly. She went and got a wet cloth and placed it on Maddie's head and arms to cool her off. "I guess we should take your temperature, huh?" She went and got a baby thermometer, something she always kept handy when her nieces and nephews visited. "Okay, now, don't worry, this won't hurt...I promise." She quickly took Maddie's temperature and when she read what the thermometer said, her eyes went wide. "Okay, time to call mommy."

"Mama!" Maddie screamed.

"We're going to get mommy over here, okay? Mommy will be here soon." Carol found the piece of paper with all of the numbers on it and dialed the restaurant.

RESTAURANT

"Toby, this dinner was really excellent. Thank you for taking me here," CJ said as she looked into his dark brown eyes.

"You're very welcome, and it was my pleasure." He was about to kiss her when a waiter walked over to their table.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Cregg, there is a phone call for you. It sounds urgent."

"Oh my G-d, Maddie!" She looked at the waiter. "Where may I use the phone?"

"At the reservation table, ma'am."

"Thank you." She got up and rushed over to the table and picked up the phone. "Hello, this is CJ...Carol?" She said in one breath.

"Hi CJ, yes it's Carol. Listen--"

"Carol, why do I hear crying in the background? Is something wrong with Maddie?" Her voice was now filled with panic.

"Maddie woke up with a 102.1 temperature, CJ. My guess is that--"

"Holy sh--" She looked around the restaurant. She wasn’t about to swear in front of dozens of people.

"CJ, please, my guess is that Maddie has--"

"Is anything else wrong? I mean is she vomiting," she asked quietly, so not to disturb the other people. "Is she in pain or anything?"

Carol sighed. "CJ, let me tell you and please don't interrupt."

"Okay," she said, taking a deep breath.

"Alright. My thinking is that she has a case of the flu. About a minute before I called you, yes, she did get sick. I put a cool, wet cloth on her to cool her down a bit, but CJ please don't panic. I am almost positive it's the flu."

CJ ran a hand through her hair and looked at Toby who was walking towards her. "Okay, we're on our way there." She hung up the phone.

"CJ I'm not--" Carol started to say when the line went dead. "Damn," she said to herself. She then called her neighbor and told her to put a note on the door.

"CJ will you tell me what's going on," Toby asked as they walked to the car.

"Maddie's sick. She woke up with a rather high temperature and I'm taking her home."

"You mean we," Toby said.

"I knew I should have called," CJ said, ignoring what Toby had just said.

"There wasn't anything you could have done. She would have gotten sick even if we didn't go out," he said as he started to drive to Carol's apartment.

When they arrived, CJ jumped out of the car and ran into the building with Toby in tow. "Carol!" She said, knocking vigorously. "Why isn't she answering?" CJ said in a panic. "Carol!"

"CJ--"

"Carol, it's CJ! Please, open the door!"

"CJ!" Toby said a bit louder.

She turned to him, "What?"

"Look." He handed her a note that read, 'At G.W. Meet me there.'

"Okay, well let's go then," she said as she ran out of the building and out to the car.

"CJ, I'm sure that there is no need to panic. Carol has everything under control," Toby said as he got into the car and drove to the hospital.

HOSPITAL

Carol sat next to the bed, reading to Maddie who was nearly asleep.

CJ burst into the hospital, suddenly remembering when she was last there. She quickly brushed the thought away and found a doctor. "Can you please tell me where a Carol--"

"Right this way, Ms. Cregg, the doctor said.

"Are you the one who treated her," CJ asked as the doctor led them to the bed.

"Yes ma'am. I'm Dr. Garland." He showed them where Carol and Maddie were. "Here we are. She has a rather nasty case of the flu, but she'll be alright. Just give her plenty of liquids and make sure you give her an antihistamine."

"Thank you so much," CJ said to the doctor.

"You're welcome." He smiled and walked away so that Maddie would be surrounded by people she knew.

CJ hurried around to the other side of the bed. "Carol, I can't...I don't know how to thank you. I mean, if you weren't there..."

"It's okay, CJ," Carol said. "I brought her stuff with me, since you probably want to take her home." She handed the bag to Toby who stood at the end of the bed, watching as CJ gently brushed Maddie's hair out of her face.

Maddie slowly woke up and saw CJ. "Mama?"

"Yes, mama's here," CJ said as she kissed her forehead. "Everything's going to be okay, mommy's here."

"Mama back?" She asked, sitting up.

"Yes, I'm back and we're going to go home now." She paused. "I knew I shouldn't have gone out," she said quietly to herself, not knowing that Toby had heard every word she said.

"Ready," he asked, trying to not sound hurt.

"Yeah, I'm ready," CJ said as she picked Maddie up. She then realized that he heard her. "Toby, I didn't mean what I said just now...I was scared..."

"Yeah," he said as he led them out of the hospital and out to the car.

The drive back to CJ's apartment was silent. CJ finally broke the silence, "Toby, I really am sorry. I didn't mean what I said in the hospital."

"We're here," he said as he pulled up to her building. He got out of the car and took Maddie's bag out and handed it to CJ.

"Do you want to come up and tuck her in," CJ asked.

"Uh...I really should be getting home, maybe another time."

"Okay...I had a very nice time tonight," she said.

"Yeah...See you on Monday." He kissed Maddie's forehead and walked back to his car and drove home.

CJ watched as he drove away, wondering what was wrong with him. She walked into the building and into her apartment where she tucked Maddie in. She then walked to her bedroom and changed into her pajamas, wondering what had happened.
