The Addition ~ 12

TWO WEEKS LATER

She had just finished her last briefing of the day. CJ walked out of the Briefing Room, where she was met by Toby. She smiled as they walked back to her office. It had been two weeks since they began to actually go out. CJ was happy, Toby was actually happy, and Maddie was happy. She loved Toby almost as much as she loved CJ.

"So what's up," CJ asked as the two reached her office.

"I was wondering if you wanted to have dinner tonight," he said, sitting down on the sofa.

"Let's see, it's Friday, right?" She asked as she sat down next to him.

"Yes, it's Friday. So do you want to go out for dinner or not?"

"My, my, you're quite demanding, aren't you?" She said jokingly.

"Well, yes I am." He smiled.

"I'd love to. I just have to find someone to watch Maddie. My neighbor, Mrs. Harris is going out of town tonight to visit her family." She looked away.

"Is something wrong?"

She hesitated. "It's just that...Well, I've never left her with anyone except my neighbor and she is so shy. I don't want her to think I'm abandoning her or anything."

"CJ, listen to me." He put a hand on her face and turned it so she was looking at him. "She would never think that. She knows that mommy will always come home after work, right?"

"Yeah..."

"Then she'll understand that her mommy will come home after dinner. She'll most likely be asleep anyway."

She stood up. "That's not my point, Toby. I don't know who I can trust to leave her with. I mean, the other people in my building are nice and all, but I just don't want to leave her with someone who will be on the phone all night or simply sit in front of the television. You know what I mean?" She looked at him.

"Yes, I know what you mean, and I know of someone who can watch her." He smiled softly.

"And who would that be?"

"Carol."

"Carol?"

"Yes. In fact, I already asked her."

"You did?" She walked to the door and poked her head out of the office. "Carol, did Toby by any chance--"

"Yes, he did ask me if I could watch Madeline, and I said yes." She saw the worried look on CJ's face. "Relax, CJ. I have nieces and nephews that are right around that age. You know how many times I've watched them?"

CJ nodded and walked out of the office. "Thanks Carol, I really appreciate it."

"No problem boss. So what time do you want me to come over? Or do you want to bring her to my apartment?"

Toby walked out of the office and stood next to CJ. "Since your apartment is on the way to the restaurant we're going to, can we bring her over to yours?"

"Wait a minute," CJ said. "What about her bed, her toys, her clothes--"

"CJ, take a deep breath and relax." Toby said, taking her hand. "We can bring her favorite toys over, a pair of pajamas, and as far as the bed situation goes--"

"I'll read to her when it's her bedtime, and she'll probably fall asleep while I'm reading," Carol interjected. "I'll have a book of my own to keep me occupied so that I can be in the same room. You don't have to worry."

CJ nodded and smiled softly. "Thanks. I guess we can bring her by at around seven?" She looked at Toby.

"6:45 is better. Our reservation is at seven." Toby said.

"Okay, I'll see you then," Carol said.

"Thanks again, Carol. I don't know what I would do without you."

"You'd probably be bored because you would have no one to yell at about spelling words wrong or not getting the correct facts."

"True," CJ said, laughing softly. She turned to Toby. "So I'll see you around 6:00?"

"Sounds good," he said as he kissed her softly on the cheek. He then walked down the hall to his office.

THAT EVENING

"Okay, do we have everything," CJ asked as she and Toby got out of the car.

"For the tenth time, yes we have everything."

"Okay." She smiled and opened the back door and took Maddie out of her car seat. "Okay sweetie, we're going to go see Aunt Carol now. She's a very good friend of mommy's." She smiled at Maddie who had a very worried look on her face.

Toby opened the door and they walked into the building and found Carol's apartment. He knocked on the door.

"Hi there," Carol said, opening the door. "Come on in."

CJ and Toby walked into the apartment. "This is a really nice place," CJ said.

"Thank you." Carol looked over at Maddie. "And you must be the little sweetheart that your mommy always talks about," she said softly to Maddie.

"Okay, here are the numbers where we can be reached," CJ said, taking a piece of paper out of her pocket.

Carol looked at it. "Could there be any more numbers on here?"

"It's just a precaution," CJ said, defending herself.

"Anyway, here is her bag with all of her stuff in it. It should be enough," Toby said, handing the bag to Carol.

CJ looked at Maddie. "Okay honey, mommy is going to go out for dinner now with Toby." She pointed at Toby. "And Carol is going to take wonderful care of you," she said gently.

"Mommy go away?" Maddie asked with a frightened look on her face.

"Mommy's just going out for dinner, but I promise I'll be back, okay?" Maddie nodded, still on the verge of tears. "Okay, let's go over to Aunt Carol." CJ gently set Maddie in Carol's arms and kissed Maddie on the head. "I love you so, so much sweetie." She smiled at her. She then looked at Carol. "Her favorite stuffed animal is her tiger, which is in the bag, as is her doll and her favorite book." CJ said as she tried not to look worried.

"Got it. And don't worry. If anything happens, I have a thousand numbers I can call."

"Ha, ha very funny," CJ said.

"Why don't we get going," Toby said as he kissed Maddie's head.

"Yeah, okay," CJ said hesitantly. "Thanks again Carol. We'll be back around 9:30 or so."

"Okay, I got it. You two go have fun now. Maddie and I are going to have a fabulous time, aren't we," she said, looking at Maddie and tickling her. In return, Maddie giggled.

"Bye sweetie," CJ said softly as Toby opened the door.

Maddie waved back at CJ.

"CJ, if we don't go now, they are going to give our table to another couple." Toby said, dragging CJ out the door. "She'll be fine. Carol is a good person." He looked at Carol. "See you later, and thank you again."

"No problem. Can you say bye-bye to mommy and da--Toby?" Maddie waved to CJ and Toby who actually left the apartment.

When Carol saw the tears start to roll down Maddie's face, she took her over to the couch. "Do you want to play a game that I used to play when I was little?" Maddie nodded slightly. "Okay, put your hands together. Ready?" She nodded. "Patty cake, patty cake..."

"She'll be fine, CJ," Toby said as they drove to the restaurant.

"Yeah, I know," she said with a little smile.
