The Addition ~ 11

CJ brought the large bowl of pasta over to the table where Maddie, already in her hi-chair thanks to Toby, was in. Toby was sitting as well. "Okay," CJ said, "Here we go. It's still pretty hot, so be careful." She put some on Toby's plate.

"Looks good," he said. "Is there any--"

"Sauce? Yes, right here," she finished for him.

"Thank you." He smiled and put some on his plate.

CJ then served herself and put a little bit on Maddie's plate. "Okay sweetie, it's still kind of hot, so you want to blow on it a little to cool it off," CJ said to her.

"Here, like this," Toby said. He blew on his pasta a little to show her how to do it.

In return, Maddie attempted to do the same thing, only she simply breathed normally.

"Like this," Toby said. "You have to get lots of air in you and then blow it out...Like a birthday cake." He smiled.

CJ watched as Maddie tried to do that. After three tries, she finally got it. CJ and Toby gave her a round of applause, causing the little girl to blush and smile.

"Very good," Toby said.

After the three finished eating and CJ and Toby finished cleaning Maddie's hands off from the sauce and changing her into her pajamas, Toby led her to her room. "Are you ready for me to read the story to you," he asked once she was comfortably laying down with her head on Toby's shoulder.

"Yes," she said quietly.

"Okay." He opened the book up. "'In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. In two straight lines they broke their bread, brushed their teeth, and went to bed. They smiled at the good and frowned at the bad and sometimes they were very sad. They left the house at half past nine in two straight lines in rain or shine- the smallest one was Madeline.'" He paused and looked at Maddie, who smiled and pointed to the little red haired girl in the book.

He then continued. "'She was not afraid of mice- she loved winter, snow, and ice. To the tiger in the zoo Madeline just said, "Pooh-pooh,"'" he looked over at a now laughing Maddie. "Pooh-pooh," she said, pointing to her stuffed tiger. Toby couldn't help but to smiled and had to stifle a laugh. He continued. "'And nobody knew so well how to frighten Miss Clavel.'"

CJ walked into the doorway of the room and watched as Toby finished reading the story to Maddie. "'"Good night, little girls! Thank the lord you are well! And now go to sleep!" said Miss Clavel. And she turned out the light- and closed the door- and that's all there is- there isn't any more.'" Toby looked over at Maddie who had fallen asleep with her arm wrapped around Toby's chest. He smiled and looked up at CJ.

"I think you really got her to open up to you," she said quietly.

"Yeah," he smiled when he saw Maddie holding the Madeline doll in one hand and her stuffed tiger from CJ in the other.

CJ moved in closer to put Maddie into her bed.

"Um, do you mind if I put her to bed? I mean, I understand if you want to, but..."

She smiled. "Go ahead."

"Thanks." He slowly got up and picked Maddie up, making sure her doll and animal stayed intact and set her down in her bed and raised the bar so she wouldn't fall out. He took his index and middle finger, kissed them, and place them on Maddie's forehead. "Goodnight little angel," he whispered.

CJ then walked over to Maddie and kissed her goodnight as well. She turned on the nightlight, and the two left the room.

Once in the living room, CJ turned to Toby. "You are so good with her."

"I have a few tricks up my sleeve." He winked at her and sat down on the sofa. He motioned for her to join him. "You have a real sweetheart there, you know that, don't you?"

"Of course I do. She's the best thing that's ever happened to me...Aside from meeting you." She looked over at him and kissed him tenderly.

He kissed her back. "CJ, I have to tell you something," he said when the kiss ended.

"What's that," she asked quietly.

"I think I'm falling in love with you." He looked at her, awaiting her response.

She looked up at him. "I think I'm falling in love with you too," she said after a few moments.

He wrapped his arms around her. "So what does this mean? I mean, what should we do about this?"

"I think we should live in the present and just let nature take its course. I'm sure we'll have a happy ending, just like in 'Kate and Leopold.' Only, you're not from the 19th century."

"'Kate and Leopold?'"

She looked at him. "You mean to say you haven't seen it?"

"It's a chick flick." He received a little slap on the shoulder from CJ. "Ouch. Well it is, "he said, rubbing his arm.

"Whatever. I just feel like never leaving your arms," she said.

"CJ?"

"Hmm?"

He looked her straight in the eye. "I love you."

"And I love you," she said looking at him.

"I love her too," he said as he pointed in the direction of Maddie's room.

"I knew that from the moment you walked in the door." She smiled.
