It Only Takes A Minute

He lay there motionless. He couldn't move. He wanted to open his eyes, but something was preventing him from doing so. He could feel the doctor poking and prodding him. 'Stop it,' he thought to himself. He wanted to say it, but his mouth wouldn't open.

It only took a minute for him to know that he should have listened to her. CJ was right; his car wasn't safe, but he was too proud. He didn't want any help. He wanted to prove that he could do anything. That wasn't true though. He couldn't do anything. He could have prevented this from happening though.

EARLIER THAT EVENING

CJ walked into his office and sat down. "Come on, aren't you going home?"

"Yes, I just need to finish this." He continued to type on his laptop.

"Well hurry up. I want to go home."

He looked up at her. "So go."

"I'm waiting for you, Pokey." She smiled wryly.

He rolled his eyes. "Fine." A few minutes later, he closed his laptop, put it into his bag, and put his coat on. "Okay, ready." He saw Ginger in the corner of the bullpen. "Ginger, you can go home, I'm done for the night."

"Okay, night Toby," she called back.

He walked out of the White House and could tell that she was still following him. "What exactly are you doing?"

"I'm going to drive you home," she said simply.

"CJ, I have a car here. We talked about this already."

"Yeah, you have a car that could turn on you any minute."

He looked at her, "CJ, my car is fine, okay?" They got to his car and he took his keys out of his pocket. "I'll see you tomorrow."

"Toby, please, let me drive you home. We can call a tow truck in the morning or something."

"What are you doing, being my mother?" He said sarcastically.

"Toby..."

"CJ, I have a cell phone. If something happens, I'll call you, okay? So stop worrying."

She sighed. "All right."

"I'll see you tomorrow." He got into his car and drove away. As he was driving down the highway, he noticed that the car seemed to be taking control over him. "What the hell?" He said aloud to himself. He thought about what CJ had said, about his car not being safe. Maybe she was right. He thought about...

Something wasn't right. He could feel the pain. He could tell that he was no longer driving. What happened? He tried to move, but for some reason, his body wouldn't let him. His eyes weren't opened anymore either.

He could hear voices and sirens. 'Get me out of here,' he thought to himself. He wanted to say it out loud, but for some reason, he couldn't. He could hear the paramedics talking about him; taking his pulse, making sure he was breathing, putting a neck brace on him. He could feel them put him on a hard board and then transport him to a gurney and then into something else.

Then he heard her. He heard CJ's voice pleading to go to the hospital with him. How did she find him? Had she followed him? He then felt as if he was moving. He heard sirens again. He must have been going to the hospital. He felt her hand grab his.

"Come on Toby, wake up, please wake up," CJ said.

'I will, I promise,' he thought to himself.

PRESENT

He could tell she was there; she had to be there, waiting for him to wake up. 'Come on Toby, wake up,' he thought. He had to. He knew that she was going to blame herself for this.

What about the others? Josh, Sam, Leo, even the President. Were they out there? Were they taking care of her? Telling her that she wasn't to blame? It was his fault. He should have listened to her. Now because he didn't, he was unconscious.

It only took a minute for him to realize that he should have listened to her.
