A Wonderful Life ~ 9

FOUR MONTHS LATER....

Toby was getting better each and every day with the therapy. He was now able to walk on his own and do mostly everything on his own, the only thing he was still having problems with was his speech. He found it hard to talk like he used to. But he has been back to work for a couple of weeks now and he's loving it.

"Sam...Did you get...the first part....of the speech done?" Toby mumbled.

"Yeah." Sam started to understand what Toby was saying now. It had taken him a while. He didn't want to hurt Toby's feelings by asking him to repeat everything. But now it was getting better. Sam knew what he was saying.

"I need...to proof it."

"Yeah, I'll get it to you in ten minutes."

"Yeah." Toby started walking back to his office.

"Hey Toby." Sam ran out to talk to his boss again.

"How are you doing?

"Why?" Toby gave him a confused look on his face.

"I mean, you don't look so good today."

"I can't talk....and the left side...of my face...is paralyzed. I feel...like a million bucks."

"I'm sorry, I didn't..."

"Sam, don't feel...sorry for me. I have CJ...a son...and a new...baby coming. I'm happy."

"But?" Sam knew there was more. Toby pulled him into his office and looked at him.

"What if...I can't hold...my baby." Toby felt the tears coming. "I hate...not feeling...normal."

Sam sat down at Toby's desk. "Toby, you still have a month until CJ is due. I'm sure that by then you'll be able hold the baby."

"Yeah, but...what if...I can't?" Toby took a tissue and wiped his face.

"Never say can't. You're a fighter, Toby. I know you. You'll be able to hold it."

Toby sighed, "I hope...so."

Sam patted him on the back. "Everything will be fine."

"Yeah."

"So I'm going to finish the speech now."

"Okay...I still will need...to proofread it."

"Okay." Sam walked out and went into his own office.

Toby decided to watch CJ's briefing. He turned the television on.

The Briefing Room....

"...And that will be in three weeks," CJ said. "Any questions?"

"CJ!"

"Katie."

"How's Toby doing?"

She sighed. "The personal lives of the staff are private."

"CJ!" Another reporter yelled.

"Yes?"

"Where will the President be giving his speech?"

"In the Capitol Building. Anyone else?" Just as she said that, she felt something. She tried to hide it as best she could, but realized she couldn't continue with the briefing. "I'm sorry, but that concludes the briefing." CJ walked out of the room, reporters yelling her name. She walked into her office.

"CJ?" Carol said.

"Yeah?" CJ said as she sat down.

"What's wrong?"

"I think I may going into--WHOA."

"What?"

"Labor," she finished.

Toby's office.......

Toby saw what happened and started for CJ's office.

"CJ!" Toby screamed as he opened her office door. He saw her nearly strangling Carol.

"CJ...what happened?"

"I...think she went....into labor." Carol's face was turning red. "I can't...breath."

"CJ, let Carol go!" Toby began to pull Carol.

"Pills! I need pain pills!" CJ screamed as another contraction came and she started screaming.

"What's going on..." Leo barged in and saw CJ having her hands around Carol's neck and Toby trying to pull Carol away. "CJ?" Leo asked.

"She's in labor Leo!" Carol snapped as CJ let go.

"I've already called someone." Donna ran in. "They're on their way."

"CJ, take deep breaths." Leo, Donna, Carol, and Toby all started taking deep breaths to get CJ started.

"Shut up, all of you!" CJ screamed.

"Honey...it's ok." Toby kissed her.

"It's too early Toby, what if something's wrong?"

"Nothing...is wrong. Just...relax." He said as the paramedics ran in.

"Okay, let's move her," one of the paramedics said. They got her and Toby into the ambulance and went to the hospital.

"It's too early!" CJ yelled to one of the paramedics. "I'm only eight months pregnant!"

"Ma'am, this is very normal. It happens all of the time, and people are always fine."

"Are you sure?"

"CJ, they're...paramedics. They...would--"

"Shut up!" She yelled as she had another contraction.

"Okay." He shut up for the rest of the ride.

When they got to the hospital, CJ was immediately taken up to Obstetrics. One of the doctors examined her and then it happened.

"What the hell was that?!" CJ yelled.

"Your water broke, Mrs. Ziegler. It's normal. That's a good thing. And you're a hundred percent dilated. Which means you have to start pushing."

One of the nurses helped CJ to sit up in the position she had to be in.

Toby held her hand as she pushed. He cringed as she squeezed his hand. She was squeezing it so tightly that he thought it was going to break off.

"Come on CJ, you can do it," the doctor said. "You're almost there."

"I...can't," she said as she finished a push. "I'm too tired."

"CJ, you can do this." Toby said. "I know you can. I'm here. Come on. Let's bring our son or daughter into this world."

She looked at him. For the first time in a long time, he had spoken with no pauses. She nodded and pushed one more time.

Then they heard it. The sound of a healthy, crying baby.

"Congratulations. You have a son," the doctor said.

CJ and Toby looked at each other, both had tears in their eyes.

"You're a daddy."

"You're a mommy."

CJ then felt something. "Doctor. Something's not right. It's starting again..."
