A Wonderful Life ~ 7

As Derek held onto Toby for dear life, he remembered the good times with him. Derek smiled a little when he remembered his parents bickering. It was so fun to watch and hear.

"Dad, please." Derek whispered once again. Derek sat up and looked into Toby's face, still holding his hand. Derek then closed his eyes real tight and started to say a silent prayer. When Derek put his head down, he felt something in his hand move. He moved up slowly and felt it grab onto him even tighter.

"Dad?" Derek hovered over Toby's face. "Dad, please open your eyes." Derek pleaded. Derek squeezed his hand and then watched as his eyes opened up a little. Toby looked directly at his son.

"Dad, you came back for me." Derek started crying again. Toby blinked twice to let Derek know he was ok.

"I'll go get the doctor." Derek started to get up, but Toby held his hand tight. Derek looked over at him and smiled. "I love you too." Derek kissed him on the cheek. Then Toby let him go to get the doctors.

As Derek ran out of the room, he still had tears running down his face. He went to go find a doctor. He found him talking with CJ and the others.

"Doctor! You have to come see my dad now!"

"Son, I know you're sad, and that's--"

"No! He's awake! He squeezed my hand and opened his eyes!" Derek yelled.

The doctor quickly went into Toby's room while CJ, Sam, and Josh all stood there in shock.

"Figures," CJ said. "He'll wake up for him, but not for me," she said, trying to be humorous.

The doctor then emerged. "Well, your son is right, Mrs. Ziegler. Your husband is indeed awake and he seems to be starting to breathe on his own, so we're going to put him on a respirator so he can start the process of breathing on his own again. You may see him when I come back out." The doctor went back into the room, leaving everyone in joyous tears.

"I really hope this is the last problem we deal with." CJ whispered to herself, but Derek heard her.

"You and me both mom." He smiled as CJ picked him up and swung him through the air.

"I love you so much." CJ smiled as she hugged him.

"I love you too mom." Derek smiled.

"Mrs. Ziegler, you can go on in now. He's acually fully awake now. He's also asking for someone to please kill Josh for him." The doctor said with a grin. Everyone smiled and looked over at Josh.

"Oh, Toby was just kidding." Josh laughed nervously.

"Oh yeah." Derek smiled and started running after him.

"Get him Derek!" Everyone yelled. CJ smiled as she followed the doctor to Toby's room. She walked in and saw a nurse giving him some jell and laughed at the look on his face.

"He hates jello." CJ smiled and walked up to him. Toby looked over and grabbed her hand. He could only whisper to her.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry Toby, you're still here with me." She smiled and kissed him.

"I'll always be here."

He nodded. It was very hard for him to speak. It had turned out that he didn't need the respirator.

"I'm so glad you decided to come back to us," CJ said with tears in her eyes.

"It...was...Derek," he managed to whisper out. It was difficult for him to speak because of the stroke.

"How are you feeling?"

He shrugged. He was about to say something when CJ handed him a pen and a pad of paper.

"Here, write down whatever you have to say."

He wrote, 'Kill Josh. Kill him now. Please.'

"Please? Toby, in all the time that I have known you, I don't remember you ever saying please."

'Humor me,' he wrote.

"Yeah, yeah." She kissed him on the cheek. "Someone must have been watching over you," she said as more tears gathered in her eyes. Toby raised his arm to her face and wiped the tears away.

Suddenly, the door flew open and the doctor came in with Derek in tow.

"I'm sorry, but he was adamant. He really wanted to be with his mom and dad."

The doctor smiled and left.

CJ picked Derek up and put him in front of her on the bed.

"My prayers worked," Derek said, a big smile on his face.

'Yes, they did,' Toby scribbled.

"I can't read what he wrote," Derek said to CJ. Toby rolled his eyes.

As the days went on, Toby kept getting better and better. The only think that improving was his voice. But with some speech therapy, the doctors thought he would be fine. After two weeks, they allowed him to go home.

"I...don't...need...a wheelchair." Toby mumbled.

"It's hospital policy."

"I'm..not..."

"Toby, get in the damn chair!" CJ snapped, causing Toby and the nurse to jump. Toby did as he was told and they took him down stairs, where Sam was waiting.

"Sam." Toby smiled a little. The left side of his face was still stiff.

"How are you?" Sam asked as he shook his bosses hand.

"Great." Toby said while rolling his eyes.

"I just wanted to stop by and say everyone is still thinking about you. Do you guys need any help?" Sam asked CJ.

"I think we're ok." She smiled. "Thanks for everything Sam."

"No problem. Get back to work soon Toby. I hate doing your job." Sam joked as Toby laughed.

"I've been saying that for years." Toby said.

"I should get back to work. I dropped Derek off at school this morning. I cleared my schedule so I can pick him up at three."

"Thanks Sam, that would be helpful." CJ said as she took Toby to the car and helped him in.

"Sure. I'll see you two later." Sam smiled and patted Toby on the back before leaving.

As CJ drove home, she couldn't help but to look over her shoulder at Toby every few minutes.

"I'm not...going...anywhere," he said as he turned his head as best he could to look at her.

"I know that. I just...I...I don't know how I could live without you, Toby. I didn't want to even think about it. Then the doctor said that you were never going to wake up, and I got so scared, and--"

"Hey, I'm...here. I'm not...going to leave you."

She nodded and wiped a few tears away. "I know that now. And so does he. Or she." She said as she patted her stomach. She was definitely starting to show, only now she was used to it.

"I...can't...wait," he said with a smile on his face.

CJ drove up to the house and parked on the driveway so that there would be room for her to get Toby out of the car. She walked around to the other side and opened the door for him and helped him into the wheelchair. When they got into the house, she wheeled him into the living room.

"SURPRISE!" Many people yelled.

"What the--" CJ started to say.
