As the three of them waited, they noticed all the press that had formed outside waiting for any comment. CJ couldn't believe this was happening. After all of this, they couldn't be happy? Why did this have to happen?
"Mrs. Ziegler." The doctor came out.
"What's happening?"
"Well, it took a while for us to get a pulse, but we did manage to get his heart going again. The problem is the time that had passed while he was in cardiac arrest."
"How much damage did it cause?" Abbey asked holding CJ's hand.
"I honestly don't see him ever being able to breath on his own. We have him hooked up to a ventilator right now, that's why I'm here."
"What?" CJ couldn't control the tears.
"He's got a donor card, but if he stays on the ventilator the good organs will become bad."
"You want me to take him of life support?" CJ snapped.
"It's the only thing we have left to do." The doctor looked down as CJ fell to the seat.
"Are you sure there's no chance of him breathing on his own again," Abbey asked, trying to hold back the tears, but finding it impossible.
He sighed. "If you want, we can keep him on the ventilator for a couple of days. I must warn you though. If there is no improvement within 36 hours, you will have to make a decision as to what you want to do, Mrs. Ziegler. I am sorry." The doctor quietly left the room.
"He can't die. He just can't," CJ said as she started crying again.
Sam, who had been completely silent the entire time, got up. "I...I need to make some calls," he said, his voice shaky. He wasn't crying though. He was still in shock. He walked out of the waiting room and into the hall. He asked the nurse if he could use the phone. She handed it to him. He dialed CJ and Toby's house first.
CJ and Toby's house.....
"What happened, Josh? Why did mom leave so quickly?"
"Something happened, Derek. Your dad...he had a stroke," he said as he sat Derek down.
"Is he okay?" Tears started to fill the boy's eyes.
Josh was about to say something when the phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Josh, it's Sam," Sam said in a solemn tone.
"What is going on? How is he," Josh asked, making sure Derek couldn't hear the conversation.
"Toby...he...while they were working on him, he had a heart attack."
"Oh G-d." Josh could feel a lump forming in the back of his throat.
"Did something else happen?"
"They took him up to the OR to have a bypass, and I guess he went into cardiac arrest for longer than they thought..."
"Is he--"
"The doctors are saying that he should be taken off of the ventilator and that CJ needs to make a decision as to whether or not she wants to donate the good organs."
Josh could barely speak. His eyes welled up with tears. "I'm going to take Derek to the hospital. CJ should at least be the one to tell him."
"Yeah. I've got to call everyone else. I'll see you later." Sam hung up the phone. He knew that Abbey already told Jed and probably Leo. He dialed another number.
"Josh Lyman's office," Donna answered.
"Donna."
"Sam. What's going on?" Her face changed from worry to sadness as Sam told her what had happened.
"Tell the others for me?"
"Yeah," she said as she wiped the tears from her face. She hung up and went to tell Bonnie, Ginger, Margaret, and Carol what had happened.
Josh's car.......
"What happened, Josh? Is it bad?"
"Your mom is going to tell you." Josh said quietly.
"She needs to be the one to tell you."
"Is my dad dead?" Derek cried out.
"No, he's...Just wait." Josh said as he tried to hold his own tears back.
As he pulled into the parking lot near the hospital, Derek jumped out and ran in. Josh was a little behind him.
"Mom!" Derek screamed when he saw CJ.
"Derek." CJ ran and picked him up.
"What's wrong with dad?" Derek screamed.
"He's sick honey. Very sick." CJ couldn't help but cry.
"I want to see him."
"Honey, you shouldn't see him like this."
"I want to see him. He came and saw me when I was sick. Please, I need to do this." Derek said while looking into CJ's eyes. CJ looked over at the doctor who was standing near the desk. He nodded.
"Ok, honey, I have to warn you. He's hooked up to a lot of machines and he's in a deep sleep. You won't get to talk to him."
"I understand. I just need to see him."
CJ showed him where the room was. She walked inside with him. "Are you sure you can do this alone," she asked again.
"Yes mom. I have to." He wiped his tears from his eyes and kissed her and walked over to Toby's bed. He sat down and took Toby's hand.
For a few minutes, Derek didn't say anything. He just sat there and looked at Toby. He took a deep breath. "Hi dad, it's me. I know you probably can't hear me right now, but I wanted to talk to you so badly. I had to just say a few things, and now I'm going to say them. I love you. I've loved you ever since the day you found me and took me to your house and then invited me to be a part of your family. You and mom are the two greatest people in my life. I don't think anyone has ever loved me so much before. Not even my real mom and dad. So I'm here to say that you can't go yet. It's just not your time. I love you so much, daddy." He wiped a few tears away, but they just kept coming. "Please, daddy, please wake up. Mom and I need you. We need you because we love you so much. Please daddy, please." He took Toby's hand and put his head on Toby's chest and started to cry, not taking his hand off of Toby's. Derek looked up. "Please G-d, if you can hear me, let my daddy live. There are so many people who love him. Please don't take him away yet. Please." Derek looked back at Toby and let the tears fall down his face.
