A Wonderful Life ~ 5

"Have you lost it?" Andy yelled again.

"Well, I think you two need to be alone." Josh smiled and ran out.

"Josh!" Toby yelled, but he didn't stop. Toby felt himself get dizzy, so he leaned on the door.

"What the hell is the matter with you, you told the President that he shouldn't support the NEA! What went through you mind!"

"Andy, I have a very bad headache, could you stop yelling?" Toby grabbed his head again with both hands.

"I'll stop yelling after you tell me what the hell you were thinking?" She said in a softer voice. Toby tried to walk over to his desk, but couldn't shake the dizzy feeling away.

"Toby?" Andy walked over to him and helped him stand.

"What's the matter?"

"Look, I was....just trying to get out of the meeting..." Toby tried to talk, but found himself getting weak. "I just..." Toby collapsed on the ground. Andy tried to hold him, but failed. She went down with him holding his head up.

"Someone help me!" Andy screamed while holding Toby's head. "Come on Toby, don't do this to me."

"What happened?" Sam ran up. "Toby!" Sam screamed and fell to the floor next to him. "No, Toby, come on. Wake up!"

"Oh G*d." Andy started crying."

"What?" Sam asked.

"I don't feel a pulse."

"What's going on?" Abbey rushed in. "Ginger told me to run over here." Abbey fell next to Toby and checked his eyes. She felt for a pulse. "Oh no, Toby!"

"What's going on?" Sam started screaming.

"I think he might have just had a stroke. Did someone call..."

"They're on their way." Bonnie yelled.

"Come on Toby, wake up," Andy said as she held his head.

"Okay." Abbey said, taking over in her doctor mode.

"We have to do CPR. At least until the ambulance gets here. Sam? You know CPR?"

"Yeah. What should I do? Chest compressions or mouth to mouth?"

"Compressions. Do five of them, then wait five seconds while I breathe for him, and we'll try that."

"Okay." Sam did as she said.

"I got one!" Andy yelled after two minutes.

Right as she said that, the EMT arrived. "What happened here," one of the men asked Abbey.

"We think he had a stroke. He was complaining of a headache and dizziness, and then he fainted." Abbey's voice was even. She had to remain strong for everyone else.

"Okay. Did his heart stop at all?"

"Yes, we did CPR and were able to revive him."

"Alright. Guys, let's move him onto the board." They lifted Toby up and put him on the board and rushed out to the lobby and out of the West Wing, Sam, Andy, Josh, and Abbey in tow.

"I'm going with him," Sam said.

"Okay. Ma'am, are you coming as well?"

"Yes," Abbey said as she and Sam waited for Toby to be lifted into the ambulance and then climbed in.

"Josh," Sam said. "Call CJ for me, will you?"

"Yeah. Hey, where's Derek?"

"While you were briefing, I drove him home."

"Okay, I'll go call CJ," Josh said as the ambulance doors were closed.

They drove away, leaving everyone in shock of what just happened. "Come on people, we still have work to do," Leo said calmly.

Toby and CJ's House......

"See? I told you that dad wouldn't ever be mad at you," CJ said.

"Yeah, I guess you're right." Derek smiled. "Do you need anything, mom?"

"No, not right now, but thank you."

Just then, the phone rang.

"Hello." CJ answered.

"CJ...Something happened..." Josh was out of breath.

"Josh, what's wrong?"

"It's Toby. He had a stoke, I think. Abbey thinks. I don't know, it happened so fast."

"Josh! Where is he?" CJ yelled.

"They took him to GW. Sam and Abbey are with him."

"Is he ok?"

"He lost a pulse while he was here, but Sam got him back. But he wasn't awake."

"I need you here Josh, you need to stay with Derek."

"I'm on my way."

"Hurry." CJ slammed the phone down while trying to hide the tears from Derek.

"What happened?" Derek asked.

"Nothing, look, Josh is coming over to watch you. Can you be good for me and stay here until he gets here. I have to leave."

"I'll stay right here." Derek smiled.

"Thank you." She kissed him. "I love you."

"I love you too."

CJ grabbed her coat and ran out and got in the car.

At the hospital....

"Any news?" Sam asked every doctor he saw. Most of them didn't even know what he was talking about.

"Sam, sit." Abbey ordered. "They will tell us when they know." Just then, they heard someone screaming for the doctor and Abbey ran in the back.

"He lost his pulse." The nurse said as three doctors ran in. The doctors tried everything, but they couldn't get a pulse.

"Keep trying!" Sam yelled. "Don't give up on him."

"Please wait outside Mr. Seaborn." The doctor screamed. "Get an OR ready stat!"

"They got one." The nurse said as she got off the phone.

"Get him up, now!" The doctor ordered as they started to take him up.

"Doctor, how does it look?" Abbey asked. She saw the look in his face as he shook his head. She knew that it wasn't good.

The doctor sighed. "It doesn't look good, Dr. Bartlet. While we were working on getting his heart rhythm steady, he..."

"He what?" She demanded.

"He had a stroke and a minor heart attack, ma'am. We just sent him up to the OR to do a bypass."

"Oh G-d," Abbey said as tears started to form in her eyes. "Thank you doctor."

He nodded and went to the OR.

CJ ran to where the nurses told her Sam and Abbey were. Abbey had just finished telling Sam what had happened.

"Sam? Abbey?" CJ said, out of breath from running.

"CJ." Sam took her hand and sat her down.

"What happened to him? Josh said it was a stroke," she said, her voice full of panic and fear.

Abbey sat on the other side of CJ. "It was a stroke, CJ."

"What aren't you telling me? I can tell you're not telling me something here. What the hell happened?!"

"CJ, settle down," Sam said.

"No! I will not settle down until you tell me what happened!"

"He had a heart attack while the doctors were trying to even out his heart rhythm," Abbey said calmly and softly.

"Oh dear Lord," CJ said as she sat back down. "Where is he now?"

"The OR. They have to give him a bypass." Abbey said.

"When will we know anything," CJ asked, calmer.

"We don't know. It's a matter of sitting and waiting for any news." Abbey sat back down and took her hand. The three of them sat there in the room, waiting for any news.
