A Wonderful Life ~ 37

"Where is everyone?" Leo yelled as he found himself the only one sitting in his office. "Last time I checked, we have staff meetings right about now!"

"Sorry," Josh and Sam hurried in.

"Took long enough," Leo glared.

"Sorry," Toby rushed in next. "I had a phone call."

"I don't care," Leo snapped. "Where's your wife?"

"Don't know," Toby folded his arms and looked away.

"What the hell?"

"They had a fight," Sam mentioned.

"I don't care," Leo moaned. "Listen, I don't have time to wait. Josh, are you still meeting with Henry from State?"

"Yeah, I'm having lunch with him," Josh nodded.

"Who's meeting Jack?"

"Sam," Toby mentioned. "I have something to do at lunch."

"What?" Leo asked, then shook his head. "I don't care."

"Sorry," CJ walked in and sat next to Josh.

"CJ, don't mention anything about the budget at the briefing today. If they ask, tell them you'll have something tomorrow."

"Will I?" CJ asked.

"We'll know tomorrow," Leo shrugged. "Can we do this today without making mistakes?"

"Probably not," Josh shook his head.

"Everyone out," Leo moaned.

"Thank you sir," Everyone nodded and walked out.

"Well, I think that went well," Josh said quietly to Sam.

"What did?"

"They didn't have a yelling match."

"Get the hell out of my way!" CJ yelled.

"You were in *my* way!" Toby yelled back.

Josh gave Sam a look. "Okay, so I was wrong." He and Sam went to their offices, leaving CJ and Toby alone in the hall.

"Toby, out of my way. Now. I have work to do."

"You know, if you spoke in complete sentences, things would be a lot easier to understand." He retorted.

"Oh shut up!" She walked to her office and nearly slammed the door shut. Carol simply looked at Toby.

"What?" He asked.

"Nothing," she said, confused.

He shook his head and headed back to his office.

"CJ, you have a call. Line one," Carol said.

"Thanks." CJ picked up the phone. "Hello?" As she listened to the call, she nearly dropped all of the papers she was holding. "Yes, I'll be there as soon as I can." She hung up the phone.

"Toby, phone call," Ginger said.

"Yeah." He picked up the phone. "Toby Ziegler." He put his pen down and almost dropped the phone. "Yeah, I'll be right there." He hung up the phone. "Ginger, I have to go. Tell Leo I'll be back when I can."

"What happened?"

"Just tell him!" He rushed out.

"Okay..." She said as she watched him hurry out of the office.

"Carol, please tell Leo that I have to go."

"What's going on?"

"Just tell him!" CJ said as she put her coat on and ran out of the door.

"It hurts," Derek moaned as he kept his hand on his stomach.

"Don't worry, your parents will be here soon," his teacher said. "I'm just going to get you a cold cloth, okay?"

He nodded. When she was gone he turned to Jack. "Man I hope this works."

"Where the hell is everyone?" Leo stormed down the hall.

"CJ had to take off," Carol said, quickly.

"So did Toby," Ginger mentioned.

"Josh had a lunch date with Amy," Donna said.

"Sam's on the hill," Bonnie added.

"I don't care," Leo rolled his eyes and went back to his office.

"Yes, I'm here for Derek Ziegler," Toby said quickly.

"Yes, follow me," The teacher said. Just then, CJ came running down the hall.

"What are you doing?" Toby snapped.

"I got a call from the school," CJ glared. "What are you doing?"

"I got a call too," Toby snapped.

"Derek told me I had to call both of you," The teacher mentioned.

"Where is he?" CJ and Toby moaned, as they figured out what their son just did.

"He's right over here," the teacher said as she led the two over to Derek.

"Will you give us a moment, please," CJ asked.

"Sure. Derek, feel better soon."

He looked up at his teacher. "I will."

CJ and Toby looked down at Derek, not looking very happy.

"I'm glad you could come," he said, pretending to be in pain.

"Yeah, we're here to take you home," Toby said. He looked at CJ and then again at Derek. "Is there something you want to tell us?"

"I don't know what you mean," he said innocently.

"Derek, we both know you're not really sick, so what is going on? Why did you have your teacher call us and why did you pretend you were sick?"

He sat up and looked at them, tears forming in his eyes. "I don't want you guys to fight anymore. It makes me scared."

"Derek, all couples have fights," CJ said in a calm voice.

"Yeah, it's a part of being married," Toby added.

"But dad didn't come home last night and you said he wasn't going to come home tonight." Derek wiped his eyes.

"Derek, we couldn't love you more if we tried," CJ said. She kissed his head.

"She's right," Toby said.

"Really," CJ and Toby said at the same time.

Derek smiled, "Okay."
