A Wonderful Life ~ 33

"What are you doing here?" Toby asked, still in shock.

"I came to visit some old friends and thought I'd say hi to my brother," David smiled. "Nice digs," He mentioned.

"I don't want to sound rude or anything," Toby started.

"Yeah, cause that would be so unlike you," David said sarcastically.

"But, I have a lot of work to do," Toby finished, ignoring David's last comments.

"Communications Director of The White House," David smiled. "Who knew my baby brother had it in him."

"Listen."

"I tried to call when President Bartlet was elected to congratulate you, but you never returned my phone calls. Then, I read in the paper that you were getting married to CJ Cregg. Then, I found out you had twins. And none of this came from you," David said coldly. "Brothers talk the last time I checked."

"I meant to call you," Toby mentioned.

"That's crap Toby," David snapped. "You never meant to call me. Sam was the one who called me to let me know you were okay after the shooting. And Sam was the one who called me to let me know you were okay after your stroke."

"Sam called you?" Toby asked, irate.

"Yeah. He thought I should know what was going on instead of hearing it on the news."

"Did you come here to yell at me?" Toby yelled. "Because I've been getting yelled at a lot lately!"

"I don't want to yell. I want to see my niece and nephews. And I want to visit with my friend, CJ Cregg. Or are you going to spare me the chance to even do that?"

"Go see CJ for all I care!" Toby snapped. "Her office is down the hall."

"Fine!" David walked out.

"Fine!"

"Damnit!" Toby yelled as he sat down at his desk. How could Sam do this? How could he betray him like this? He knew that Toby and David didn't get along.

David knocked on CJ's door. "Hey stranger."

"David!" CJ got up and hugged him. "How have you been?"

"Pretty good, thanks." He smiled.

"Uh oh. You saw him, didn't you?"

"Yeah, and I must say he was less than thrilled to see me."

She nodded, "Yeah, well you know him."

"Yep. My brother the jerk."

"Hey that's my husband you're talking about!" She said as she hit him playfully on the shoulder.

He sat down on the sofa. "So tell me, how are you and your new family doing?"

She sat down as well. "Pretty well. Derek is a great kid. I told you about his Science thing, right?"

"That's one of the main reasons I'm here."

"Yeah...We didn't want Toby to know...Mostly because of what happened between the two of you."

"I know." He smiled. "So, how are the twins?"

"They couldn't be better." She smiled.

Sam then rushed into CJ's office.

"What on earth..." CJ said.

"He's going crazy!" Sam snapped.

"Who?" CJ asked.

"Toby. He's throwing those pink, rubber balls at me and calling me a trader. I've been writing a speech all day, what did I do?" Sam asked.

"I think I have an idea," David moaned.

"Who are you?" Sam asked.

"We haven't formally met, I'm David Ziegler," David smiled and shook Sam's hand.

"It's nice to finally meet you," Sam nodded.

"I think Toby thinks Sam called me in," David smiled.

"He's going crazy," Sam moaned.

"I'll go deal with my husband. Why don't you two get to know each other," CJ moaned.

"You're going to deal with him?" David asked, shocked.

"I'm the only one that doesn't back down," CJ mentioned before leaving.

"Which is usually a bad thing," Sam whispered.

"I heard that!" CJ said as she walked through the hall. She opened the closed door of Toby's office and *slammed* it shut. "What the hell is wrong with you?!"

"Me? You just came in here like a maniac!"

"You know what I mean, Toby. How can you treat your brother like that? He's here to visit you." She said as she sat down.

"Yeah well maybe I don't want to visit with him." He sat down in his chair.

"Oh that's very mature," she said sarcastically.

"You know what CJ? I don't have time for this right now."

"You never have time to talk about your family! Not even your sisters."

He looked at her. "CJ, get out before something happens."

"Like what," she challenged.

"Before we say something we may regret," Toby warned.

"You seem to have forgotten Tobus, I'm more stubborn then you," CJ held her ground.

"CJ! My relationship with my brother or my sisters are none of your business!" Toby snapped.

"Oh, I forgot. Married people usually don't talk about their family," CJ said sarcastically.

"CJ. Just leave this alone," Toby pleaded.

"Toby, talk with your brother. Get along with him," CJ ordered.

"No!"

"Fine," CJ yelled. "Then you find another place to stay tonight. Because David is staying with us!"

"What?" Toby shouted. "That's my house!"

"It's mine now," CJ smiled and stormed out. "I'm not backing down!" She snapped at Ginger, who just happened to be walking past.

"Okay," Ginger shrugged, confused.

"Fine. I don't need this," Toby walked out screaming. "I'll have fun on my own tonight!"

"Fine!"

"Fine!"

CJ stormed back to her office and slammed the door shut. She took a deep breath before saying anything. "David, you're more than welcome to stay at our house tonight, especially since my husband won't be there."

"What? CJ, I didn't mean to..."

"No, it's okay. You didn't do anything wrong. It's Toby. He doesn't understand the meaning of the word family."

Sam in the meantime made his way to the door. "Yeah well I think I'll be going now..."

"I'm sorry you had to see that," CJ said.

"It's not your fault, it's okay." He smiled weakly and left the office and walked to his, bumping into Toby along the way.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Toby yelled at Sam.

"What? Toby I think I should be asking you that very question. What is wrong with you? Why can't you get along with your brother? He came here to visit you and what do you do? You start yelling at him as if he killed someone. He's family, Toby. Why are you doing this?"

Toby looked at Sam. "I don't need this from you. Since when did you become my father? The last time I checked you weren't a father...You barely have a father yourself!"

Sam just looked at Toby, hurt and walked into his office without saying anything. He closed the door and sat at his desk.

"Damnit!" Toby said to no one in particular. What was going on here? What was happening to his family?
