A Wonderful Life ~ 30

"Well, Jack's mom got home and flipped when she saw Sam in the house with him," CJ said. "Then Sam tried to explain himself, and then she broke a glass over his head."

"Is he okay?" Toby asked, shocked.

"He says he's fine, but he's got Jack," CJ said.

"What do you mean, he's got Jack?" Toby asked, confused.

"I don't know, Sam's home right now and said he has Jack. He wants you to go over there."

"Okay, are you okay to stay here with Derek and the twins?"

"Yeah, go," CJ pushed him out. "Call me when you find out something."

"I will," Toby nodded.

"What's wrong?" Derek asked as Toby rushed off.

"Don't worry about it," CJ nodded.

"Is Jack okay?"

"I don't know."

Toby quickly drove over to Sam's apartment and knocked on the door.

"Sam?"

Sam came to the door with an ice pack on his head.

"Hi Toby, come on in."

"What the hell happened?! Are you okay? Is Jack okay? And what are you doing with Jack?"

"Sit down," Sam said calmly. "First of all, Jack's in the other room, sleeping...or still crying. I was comforting him but then you came, and I said I'd be back soon." He took a deep breath.

"Anyway, I was at Jack's house waiting with him for his mother to come home. We were sitting on the sofa talking when his mom came in and went nuts. I tried telling her who I was, but she wouldn't listen..."

"What aren't you telling me?" We asked quietly.

"Toby, his mother was drunk or something...She started yelling at Jack for letting, and I quote, 'a complete stranger into the house,' so she grabbed his arm and smacked him upside the head."

"Oh G-d. Is he alright?"

"He said he's used to it, that everything would be fine...Toby, his mother physically abuses him. So I called the cops while she was in the other room getting something and they came over and I told them what happened. They arrested her which is why Jack is here with me."

Toby didn't know what to say. "What was his reaction to his mother being arrested?"

"He was crying, naturally. I mean, he loves her; he didn't want to see his mother get arrested."

"What are we going to do now," Toby said aloud to himself.

"Well, for one, someone needs to go down to the police station and talk with Jack's mom," Sam mentioned. "And I don't think I'm feeling up to it."

"I'm not going," Toby shook his head.

"Toby. Please, someone needs to stay here with Jack."

"I will."

"Toby," Sam began whining.

"Fine," Toby moaned.

"Hi Toby," Jack said, walking into the room.

"Hey pal," Toby got up and walked over to him. "You okay?"

"My head hurts a little," Jack looked over at Sam.

"But I think his head is worse."

"Don't worry about it," Sam smiled. "I'm fine."

"I'm so sorry you had to see it," Jack looked down.

"Jack, why didn't you tell me about your mom?" Toby asked.

"Because I thought things would change. But after thinking about it, I know they won't."

"Why?" Sam asked.

"Because she never wanted a kid," Jack took a deep breath. "She told me that I wasn't planned."

"Why would she say that?" Toby asked, to no one in particular.

"Because she thought I was going to be her meal ticket, because she got social security."

"Let me go down to the station to see your mom," Toby offered.

"Don't let her stay there. Please," Jack cried. "She doesn't need to be in jail."

"Well she can't be a mother to you if she is going to hit you," Toby said as he put his coat on.

"But I love her," Jack said, starting to cry.

"I know you love her, and that's very good, but Jack, she won't take care of you the way you should be taken care of." Sam said.

"But I'll be an orphan!" He ran into the bedroom and closed the door.

Toby was about to walk into the room, but Sam stopped him. "Go down to the station. I'll talk to him."

"Okay, I'm going."

"Thank you." Sam smiled and watched as Toby walked out of the apartment. He then walked into the room in which Jack was in.

"Hey," he said quietly.

"Hi," Jack said without lifting his head up from the pillow. Sam sat down next to him and put his hand on his back.

"Jack, you do understand why it's best if you don't go back and live with your mom, right?"

Jack didn't look up. "Because things won't get better," he said, crying.

"That's right. But you know what?"

"What," Jack asked as he sat up.

"You are a very loving person. You love your mom unconditionally. That is very admirable."

"I'm loving?"

"Yeah, you are." He smiled.

Jack looked down. "No one has ever said that to me before."

"No one has ever said they love you before?"

Jack shook his head no.

"Well don't worry. Everything will work out, okay?" Sam said as he put an arm around Jack.

POLICE STATION

"Toby Ziegler," Rhonda smiled as he rushed in.

"It's freezing outside," Toby moaned.

"That happens when it snows," Rhonda said sarcastically.

"Are you going to bug me?" Toby glared.

"Yes," Rhonda said simply.

"I need to see someone."

"The kid's mom," Rhonda nodded. "She's still in booking."

"How is she?"

"She's drunk," Rhonda rolled her eyes.

"Why do you bug me?" Toby whined.

"Because it's so much fun."

"She's done," An officer walked out.

"Good, can you take Mr. Ziegler back to see her please."

"Sure."

"Thanks," Toby smiled and followed the man back.

"She in here," He opened the door.

"Thanks," Toby walked in. "I'll be okay alone."

"I'll be right outside."

"Where's my son?"

"He's with my friend, Sam."

"The man that was in my house was your friend?"

"Yes. And he has a cut on his head thanks to you, and you scared the crap out of your son."

"He deserved it!"

"Listen, we both know Jack is better off somewhere else. Why don't you let me take him for a while, until we can find a home for him?"

"You want me to give away my son?" She stood and walked over to him quickly. "He's my son!"

"You don't love him. All he is to you is a check every month!" Toby snapped.

"You bastard," She raised her hand and slapped him. "Get out!"

"I'm not leaving until we work something out about Jack." Toby said, hiding the pain in his cheek.

"Well that isn"t going to happen anytime soon!" She yelled. "He is my son, not yours, and not your friend"s."

"Maybe you should have thought of that before you started hitting him and verbally abusing him."

"Get the hell out of here!" She yelled again.

"Not until we work something out. I want to do this in a civilized manner."

She rolled her eyes. "Just get out of here, will you?"

"Fine, I guess you really don"t love him."

"Look, the little brat deserved what he got. He knows not to let people in the house unless I"m there."

"So for punishment you hit him?"

"I don"t hit him. "

"Oh really. Then what do you call the bruises that are on his arms and legs?"

She didn"t say anything.

"That"s what I thought."

CJ AND TOBY"S HOUSE

"What happened, mom? Please tell me," Derek said again.

"It"s nothing to worry about."

"Mom!"

She sighed. "Fine. Go sit down."

"Okay." He sat down on the sofa.

Jack"s mom freaked out when she saw Sam with Jack in his house and hit Sam over the head and then I guess she..."

"She always hits him."

She looked at him. "She does?"

"Yeah. I hate how he lies about it."

"We"ll figure something out, okay?"

"Yeah."

"Go do your homework now."

Derek went upstairs and tried to concentrate on his homework.

SAM"S APARTMENT

"Coming!" Sam said again. He opened the door. "Toby? What are you doing back so soon?"

"That woman cannot take care of her son!" He said quietly. "She basically admitted to me that she hits him all of the time."

"That"s because she does," Jack said as he came out of the room and sat down on the sofa.

"What am I supposed to do?" He asked, crying.

"I"m not sure yet, but we"ll think of something," Sam said, looking at Toby, worried about what was going to happen next.
