A Wonderful Life ~ 28

"Hey Toby, I was wondering if I couldn't have some water?" Jack asked.

"Sure," Toby smiled and got him a cup.

"Thanks," Jack grinned. "Derek fell asleep."

"The pain medication," Toby laughed. "It's almost midnight, why are you still awake?"

"I'm always awake around this time. I'm usually waiting for my mom."

"She gets home this late?"

"Yeah, I'm always worried about her, so I wait."

"Even on school nights?"

"Yep. I'm used to it," Jack nodded.

"Well, you know you're welcome here anytime," Toby smiled.

"Thanks. It's fun here. More active then it is at my house."

"Do you like it there?"

"Sometimes," Jack looked down.

"You're a good kid," Toby smiled. "Let me think of something to help you."

"Thanks Toby," Jack smiled. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight," Toby smiled as Jack ran upstairs.

"That was nice," CJ mentioned from the back.

"He's a good kid,"

"What are you planning to do?"

"Well, I'd take him out during the week, but with the trip to California next week, I won't be able to. I thought about asking Sam."

"Sam," CJ nodded.

"I think he would make a good father figure," Toby smiled.

CJ was silent for a few moments. "Toby, you're not thinking of taking him out of his home, are you?"

"No, I just think that Jack needs a father figure in his life right now, and Sam just seems like a person who could really help someone in Jack's position."

She nodded, "Yeah, I guess you're right." She sighed.

"Anyway, I'm going to head to bed. Long day tomorrow."

"It's Sunday tomorrow."

"I know that. But Derek has a lot of studying to do."

"Oh, right."

"So I was thinking about having Sam come over and take Jack home..." She looked over at him. "What do you think?"

He smiled, "I think that's a fine idea, Claudia Jean."

"Why thank you." She took his hand. "Come on, let's go upstairs and sleep. The twins are sleeping...for now, and we can get some sleep."

"Okay, I'm coming."

2:00am....

CJ couldn't fall asleep. She had been trying to for two hours, but she kept thinking about seeing David on Monday. What would Toby think? She sighed and tried once again to get some sleep.

4:00am...

The sound of a scream woke the two up. "What was that," Toby asked, sitting up.

"I don't know, but it sounded like it came from Derek's room."

"Dude, are you okay?" Jack asked, trying to help Derek up.

"I just fell out of bed, how do you think I feel?" Derek said, sarcastically.

"What happened?" CJ yelled as her and Toby barged in.

"Derek fell out of bed," Jack pointed out.

"Are you okay?" Toby asked, helping him back on the bed.

"Oh, I'm fine. My broken leg broke my fall," Derek snapped.

"I'll get some ice," CJ hurried out.

"How did you fall out of bed?" Toby asked.

"I don't know, I was sleeping and then I felt a sharp pain in my leg," Derek said. "Then when I woke up, I found myself falling towards the floor."

"I tried to catch him," Jack said.

"Thanks for looking out for me man," Derek smiled and patted his friend on the back.

"Here," CJ walked in and put the ice pack on the cast.

"Yeah, I can really feel it through the cast," Derek moaned.

"Don't be a smart ass," Toby glared.

"Sorry," Derek smirked. "Can I have a pill?"

"I'll get it," CJ moaned and went back downstairs.

"Are you trying to get out of homework again?" Toby asked.

"Yeah, that's why I fell out of bed," Derek rolled his eyes. "Listen, can Jack stay tomorrow?"

"It's a school night. I don't think Jack's mom would like it."

"He's right, mom won't let me," Jack mentioned.

"Well that's very wise," CJ said as she applied the ice pack to Derek's leg.

"Mom, I can't feel the stupid ice! I don't need it!" He took the pack and threw it on the floor.

"Fine, I have tried to help, but obviously you don't need it," CJ said sharply as she picked the ice pack up and went back downstairs to put it back in the freezer.

"Derek!" Toby said in a louder voice, making sure not to wake the twins.

"You don't ever talk to your mother that way, do you understand?"

Derek looked down. "Yes sir," he said quietly.

"And tomorrow you are going to apologize to her for what you did."

"But I said that I wouldn't be able to feel the ice pack and she put it on my leg anyway!"

Toby sighed and put the blankets back so they were covering Derek.

"You guys should just get some sleep." He walked over to Jack and covered him as well. He then walked out of the room.

"Are you totally out of your mind," Jack asked once Toby left.

"What are you talking about?"

"You can't just yell at your parents like that! All they were trying to do was help."

"Whatever. Come on, let's go to sleep."

Toby walked back into his and CJ's room. "Hey," he said, getting into bed.

"Hi," she said flatly.

"He's just fed up about his leg...You do know that, don't you?"

"I guess. I just don't understand why he is acting like this." She looked over at him.

"I don't know why either, but he'll grow out of it, you'll see."

"I hope so."

"Now I can't sleep!" Derek moaned.

"Why?"

"I hate yelling at my mom or dad, I didn't mean too," Derek looked over. "I'm just mad that I can't move around."

"They understand that Derek."

"What if they don't?"

"Then say your sorry tomorrow and tell her why you said it. She'll forgive you."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes," Jack answered. "Now to to sleep."

"Okay, goodnight."

"Goodnight."

THE NEXT MORNING

"Wake up you sleepyheads," CJ walked in.

"What time is it?" Derek mumbled.

"Almost ten."

"Good morning," Jack sat up and smiled.

"Mom, I'm sorry about last night. I'm just so mad that I can't move around," Derek looked down.

"It's okay, I should have known the ice was a bad idea."

"Yeah, but thank you for trying to help."

"Your welcome," CJ kissed Derek on the forehead. "I'll bring you two something to eat."

"Thanks," The boys said before walking downstairs.

"Mom, do I have to go to school? I mean, I can hardly move around," Derek said.

"Yes, you still have to go to school. Sorry buster."

"See, I told you it wouldn't work," Jack said, laughing.

"Shut up," Derek said.

Toby turned to Derek. "Okay, what did I say about saying that word?"

"Um...Not to say it?"

"That's right. So why did you just say it?"

Derek didn't say anything for a moment. "I don't know." He finally said.

"Okay, why don't you guys go get dressed," CJ said.

"Okay mom." The two boys went back upstairs and changed, with difficulty for Derek since his leg was in a cast.

"Are you two ready yet," Toby yelled up the stairs, holding a crying Adina.

"Almost!" Derek yelled back.

"Well hurry up." Toby walked over to the dining room table and placed Adina, who had stopped crying and had begun to slowly fall asleep, in her basinet.

Jack and Derek then came downstairs, Jack helping Derek with his crutches.

"I hate these things," Derek said.

"I know, but it's only for six weeks," CJ said. "Now let's get going."

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Where are we going?"

"Well, it's such a nice day, so I thought we could all go to the park."

"What about my studying? Does this mean that I don't have to study?"

"No, it means that we're going only for a little while then come home and wait for Sam to come over to pick Jack up and drop him off at home so you can study."

"Why can't we drop him off?"

"Your dad and I thought it would be better if you started studying ASAP."

"Darn."

CJ smiled, "Sorry kiddo."

Toby looked at CJ. "Do I have to go?"

"Dad hates being outside." Derek pointed out.

"Yeah, dad hates it," Toby said.

"Too bad, you're going," CJ said.

Toby didn't say anything for a while. "Fine," he finally said, "But I'm driving."

"No you're not," CJ said.

Derek looked over at Jack. "Oh no, not again."
