A Wonderful Life ~ 27

"It was you who told me about my uncle David. Didn't you say you were going to call him anyway?" Derek asked.

"Yes, but that was before your father threatened me," CJ answered. "Your dad doesn't really get along with your uncle."

"Why?"

"It's a very long story," CJ smiled. "I don't have the time, nor the energy to go into it right now. Just believe me."

"I believe you mom. It's just..." Derek gave CJ the puppy eyed look he learned from Toby.

"Don't look at me like that," CJ demanded, yet smiled.

"But it's for school mom. And you are always telling me how important school is to a young man," Derek said, seriously.

"Why are you doing this to me?" CJ moaned.

"Because I can," Derek laughed.

"Listen, I'll call him. But no word of this to dad."

"I promise."

"And if David decides to meet with us, we have to do it alone. Just the three of us."

"Okay," Derek smiled. "I would hug you, but I can get up,"

"Just work on your other homework," CJ kissed his forehead.

"Can I please take a break? I mean, I've been working for the past two hours or something like that."

"Okay, you can take the rest of the night off. You did good," CJ laughed. "You want anything?"

"I'm okay," Derek smiled.

"Okay," CJ said. "I'll be downstairs if you need any help with your work."

"Okay, thank you mom," Derek said as he got back to his homework.

CJ walked downstairs and found Toby in the kitchen.

"What on earth happened in here?! I leave for two minutes and..." CJ said, her mouth wide opened.

"Two minutes is too long," Toby said as he put a giggling Adina back in her bassinet. "She decided she didn't want to keep her dinner, so she gave it back to me."

CJ couldn't help but to laugh. "I'll go clean her up." She picked Adina back up and headed for the stairs.

"Wait, what about me," Toby whined.

"What about you? Go change your shirt or something. You're a big boy."

"Who's going to watch Samuel?"

"You will. I'll go change Adina, and you watch Samuel, okay?"

He rolled his eyes. "Fine."

CJ watched as he walked up the stairs. She grabbed a clean shirt out of the diaper bag and changed Adina and put her back in her bassinet, where she slowly fell asleep. She found the address book and looked for David Ziegler's phone number. "Please let this work," she said to herself as She dialed the number.

A few rings later, "Hello," the man on the other end said.

"Hi, is this David Ziegler," CJ asked nervously.

"Yes, may I ask who is calling?"

She cleared her throat, "Oh...yeah, this is CJ Cregg, I'm--"

"The one who married my brother," David finished for her.

"Yes, that would be me." She sat down, feeling a bit more comfortable.

"So, how's the idiot doing?" David asked.

"He's doing better. He's still going through therapy since the stroke."

"You know CJ, you would have been better off marrying me," David cracked.

"Yeah, well, last time I checked you were already married."

"Oh, I knew that," David joked. "It's been a long time Claudia."

"I know. I wanted to keep in touch after you father died, but with the election and everything..."

"CJ, believe me, I understand. It's been busy around here as well."

"Listen, I know I have no place to ask you this, but I need a favor."

"You name it, it's done. You want me to off Toby?" David grinned.

"Not yet," CJ smirked. "I need some help with our son, Derek."

"What's wrong?"

"He needs to talk to a scientist for school and he brought you up. I was thinking we could meet at the park Monday, around noon."

"Why Monday?"

"Because Toby's at work."

"Toby doesn't know about this, does he?"

"I don't feel like him going crazy right now."

"I think I can get off for an hour or so on Monday. I'll meet you there."

"Thank you David," CJ smiled. "I'll see you then."

"Take care CJ," David said, before hanging up.

"Who was that," Toby asked as he walked back into the kitchen with a clean shirt on.

"Oh, I was just calling a friend." She tried to look him in the eye, but it was rather difficult.

"CJ? What's going on?"

"Nothing. Nothing at all." She got up. "Ready for dinner?"

"We had dinner already."

"Oh...right." She sat back down.

"CJ, what's going on?" He sat down next to her.

"Like I said, I was just calling a friend." She still couldn't look him in the eye.

"Okay..." He said, not convinced at all. What was going on with her?
