A Wonderful Life ~ 14

"We never said you couldn't take care of your kids Toby. We just think you should take care of yourself." Jack snapped.

"He knows how to take care of himself dad." CJ snapped back.

"CJ..." Toby tried to object, but was hushed by CJ's hand.

"Toby had a stroke, and a heart attack, yet he still came back to us. He's strong and he can take care of his kids." CJ screamed.

"Mom, you shouldn't yell." Derek said quietly.

"Stay out of this." Jack snapped at Derek.

"I don't have too. She's my mom."

"No she's not!" Janet butted in. "CJ, don't yell at..."

"Derek is my son. Don't talk to him like that. And don't talk to Toby like that. He's my husband and I love him."

"Husband? You two had a quickie marriage that we weren't invited too..."

"I told you we had to do it quietly because of the press..."

"I don't care. You two can't just start a family. First of all, you two don't know what they hell you're doing."

"They do too." Derek screamed. "They took care of me when I needed it."

"That's because no one else would take you in!" Janet shouted.

"That enough!" Toby yelled. "You want to argue over this. Fine. But you leave Derek out of it." Toby bent down and picked Derek up. "I'm leaving for a little while."

"Where are you going?" CJ asked.

"I'm taking Derek and we're going to take a drive. He doesn't need to hear this, and frankly, I don't want to hear this." Toby said and kissed CJ on the cheek.

"I love you. And I always will. But get these two out of my house. Please." He kissed her again and walked out with Derek.

When Toby and Derek got to the car, Toby noticed that Derek had tears in his eyes. "Derek? What's wrong?"

"I'm sorry. I didn't know I was such a pain," he said as he wiped his eyes.

"A pain?" Toby kneeled down in front of Derek and hugged him. "You have never been a pain. Your mom and I love you very much. Do you understand? Nothing can change that. Nothing can change how we feel about you."

"Really?"

"Yes, really." He hugged Derek. "Now let's go."

"Where are we going?" He asked as he got into the car.

"I'm not sure yet. I just think we need a bit of a break from your grandparents."

"It sure doesn't feel like they're my grandparents. I thought grandparents were supposed to love you."

Back in the house....

"Honestly mother, how could you say those things about Derek...in front of Derek?!" CJ yelled.

"Don't you dare yell at me," Janet snapped.

"You still haven't answered me, mom."

"He's not your real son. He's some kid that Toby found on the street and someone that he felt bad for. He's not your son."

"How can you say something like that? He is my son. Maybe not by blood, but by everything else."

"You felt sorry for the kid, and then you married Toby."

"You think I married him because of Derek?"

"No, I think you married him because he got you pregnant."

"That's it!" CJ screamed. Which made the twins start crying. "Get out of my house." She said while picking the babies up.

"That's a hungry cry." Janet pointed out.

"No, it's a 'I want my daddy' cry."

"That man has nothing to offer you." Janet screamed.

"Why him?"

"Because I love him. He makes me happy. He gives me life that I've never had before. I want him with me."

"He's a bum. All he wants from you is someone to pop out his babies. He's the kind of man that does not love. One day, when you think he's working, he's going to be out with another woman."

"That's a lie. You have no idea what kind of man he is."

"He's a bum. And he will make your life a living hell. Let alone those children..."

"I want you out of my house." CJ warned.

"No, he want's us out and you do what he tells you to do."

"He's more scared of me then I am of him." CJ yelled.

"He knows that I am my own woman, and he likes that."

"CJ, all I want is the best for you."

"This is the best for me. I'm happy. Maybe too happy."

"This won't last one year CJ. He's going to find some other woman sooner or later and leave you here to take care of the kids."

CJ ignored her mother and tended to the babies.

"They are hungry, CJ. Feed them," Janet said.

CJ didn't listen to her mother. She held both of them for a few more minutes and then both stopped crying. "See, it wasn't an 'I'm hungry' cry. They miss their daddy."

"Who is probably out looking for women."

"Oh for heaven's sake mother! He's got Derek with him! He took Derek out of the house because Derek thinks you hate him."

"He's not blood. He doesn't belong in this family." Jack said.

"Who cares if he's not blood. We love him more than anything." CJ set Adina and Samuel down in their cribs and walked back into the kitchen.

Toby's car....

"I don't want to go back home," Derek said as Toby drove home.

"Sorry kiddo, we have to. Mom will be worried if we don't go home soon."

"Okay, but what if they yell at me again?"

"They won't yell at you again. I think they were just kind of shocked."

"If you're sure..."

"I'm sure." Toby gave Derek a reassuring smile.

"Okay."

They got home and got out of the car while at the same time saw another car pull up behind CJ's parent's car.

"Who's that?" Derek asked.

"Oops." Toby simply said.

"Hi Toby," Sam said as he got out of his car.

"Hi Sam."

"Sam!" Derek smiled.

"Hey pal." Sam grabbed Derek and swung him through the air. "What's wrong?" Sam asked as he saw the look on Toby's face.

"CJ's parents." Toby said frankly.

"Is that why you two were gone?"

"Yep." Toby said.

"I don't need to take this!" Janet yelled as she walked out the door. "And you!" She pointed as she saw Toby.

"You've ruined my daughters life!"

"How did I do that?" Toby asked confused.

"You brought her into this pathetic life of yours." She glared down at Derek who was hiding behind Sam.

"Sam, could you take Derek inside please." Toby asked.

"Sure." Sam smiled. "Come on pal." Sam picked him up and carried him into the house.

"Listen..." Toby started.

"No, you know what Toby, you have been pining away for CJ for years. Then you go out, find a kid on the street and then bring CJ in the play mommy. This is your doing."

"No it's not!" CJ yelled while running out next to Toby. "I decided this. I love this man."

"He will leave you CJ, and when he does, don't expect me to play babysitter." Janet warned and walked to the car with Jack in toe. "Move this damn car!" She screamed as Sam ran out and moved it.

Sam moved his car behind Toby's so that Jack could get out of the driveway.

"They didn't even say goodbye," CJ said as she looked over at Sam, Toby, and Derek.

"It's all my fault!" Derek cried as he ran into the house.

Toby moved to go into the house, but was stopped by Sam. "Can I try talking to him? I sort of had a similar experience, you know with my mother's parents."

CJ smiled a little, "Sure, thanks Sam."

"No problem." He walked into the house and up the stairs to Derek's room, hoping that what he was about to say would help Derek see that it really wasn't his fault.
