A Wonderful Life ~ 11

THREE WEEKS LATER

"Toby, did you set up the cribs?" CJ bellowed from downstairs.

"Yes."

"Derek, did you make sure everything is locked up?"

"Yes."

"Do we have baby food?"

"Yes."

"Did you get the seats in the car?"

"Yes."

"Did you..."

"CJ, we got everything together. Let's go get our kids." Toby smiled and kissed her.

"I'm nervous, what if they fall down the stairs."

"They're three weeks old, they can't walk or crawl yet." Derek pointed out. "I even knew that."

"What if I'm a bad mother?"

"CJ, you're not going to be a bad mother." Toby hugged her.

"He's right mom. You did pretty good with me." Derek smiled.

"I have to go back to work next week, don't I?"

"We're going to do fine..."

"I can't be away from them for very long, I mean. Breast feeding."

"Mom! Please." Derek ran out with a disgusted look on him face.

"Kids." CJ laughed at Derek's reaction, then looked over to Toby who looked disgusted. "What?"

"Never say that again." Toby grabbed her hand and they walked out.

"Toby, what are we going to check first?" CJ asked.

"Oh please." She gave him 'the look.'

"Fine, fine, fine." He looked to make sure the car was fine. "It's fine. Let's go."

"Okay." She and Derek got in.

"Mom? Dad?"

"Yes," CJ said.

"I barely have any room back here." CJ and Toby looked at Derek, who was mashed in between the two car seats.

"Well, you're going to have to deal with that for a little while," Toby said.

"How long is that?"

"Until they're about four."

"But that's not for four years!"

"Sorry, kiddo, that's the way the ball bounces," CJ said, earning her a strange glance from Toby.

"What? My mother taught me that saying."

"Has anyone ever told you that you have a very odd family?"

She hit him on the arm.

"Ouch. CJ, honestly. Did you have to hit me?"

"Yes."

"Fine." He was about to leave when he remembered something. "CJ."

"Oh yeah." They switched places, completely forgetting that Toby still couldn't drive.

"Are you excited?" Derek smiled at his parents.

"Very. What about you? Being a big brother." CJ smiled.

"I think it may be something I can handle." Derek smiled.

"Well, we're going to need all the help you can give us."

"Well, I'll be there for them."

"We know you will." CJ smiled and looked over at Toby.

"You ok?"

"Yeah." He smiled and took a deep breath. "I'm just fine."

"Nervous?"

"I think we both are Claudia." Toby smiled.

"Yeah." She said as she pulled into the parking lot and parked. Derek jumped out.

"Come on!" Derek yelled.

"I think he's a little too happy." CJ laughed.

"Come on mom, lets get our babies."

"I love that sound of that, you know it?"

"Yeah, I do too." Toby smiled and took CJ's hand as they walked in.

"Ah, here are the proud parents and brother," the doctor said. "Are you guys ready to take home the newest additions to your family?"

"Yes!" Derek said excitedly.

"Okay then." The doctor smiled and had the nurse bring Samuel and Adina out.

"Oh, they're so precious," CJ said as the doctor handed Adina to her.

"Yes, they are," Toby said as he held Samuel.

"Can I hold one of them," Derek asked.

"Once we get home. Let's just do that first." CJ said as she thanked the doctor. They then went back to the car, buckled the twins in, made sure Derek was buckled in, and drove home.

Home....

"Now can I hold one of them?"

"Yes, you may," Toby said as he very carefully handed Samuel to Derek.

"Remember to support his head."

"I know, dad." He smiled. "I think he likes me."

"Of course he does. You're his big brother." CJ said, smiling at the sight in front of her.

"Yeah, I'm his big brother. I'm going to teach him everything. How to tie his shoes, play video games, homework...nah, not the homework. How to play on the playground..."

"Whoa, Derek, slow down there," CJ said laughing a little.

"I just can't wait." Derek smiled. "But what will I do with the girl?"

"You can protect her from all the evil boys out there like your father." CJ grinned at Toby.

"Very funny." He smirked.

"You know, on the Baby Story, they show the parents after they take the baby home. They don't get much sleep."

"Well, we normally don't anyway." CJ laughed.

"It may be harder though. Because I'm not getting up in the middle of the night."

"I thought you wanted to help?" CJ asked.

"I will, in the normal hours of the day." He nodded.

"Thanks a lot pal." Toby smiled.

"Sure thing pop."

"What's wrong with you?" CJ laughed.

"I'm just very happy." Derek smiled and kissed his brother and sister on the head. "I still think they look like dad."

Toby rolled his eyes and couldn't help but to laugh a little. "This is pretty exciting, isn't it," he said to CJ as they watched Derek hold his little brother who was now asleep.

"Yeah, it is," CJ said quietly. She had Adina in her arms.

"He's a natural with him," Toby said as he continued to watch Derek and Samuel.

CJ nodded, "Yeah." She smiled. She was glad that their family was finally coming together.

That night.....

"Your turn," Toby said groggily as the two heard one of the babies start to cry for the tenth time.

"I'm going," CJ said as she got her robe and walked into the room where the twins were. "Hey, what's all this noise for," she said as she picked up a crying Samuel. His crying became softer as she held him. "Oh, you want some attention, do you?" She smiled a little and sat down in the rocking chair that was in the room and rocked him back to sleep. Once he was sleeping again, she laid him down in his crib and kissed him goodnight and left the room.

"Is he okay," Toby asked.

"How did you know it was him?"

"Fatherly instinct."

"Right. Well, he just wanted some attention. He's fine. Now go to sleep."

"Yes mommy."

CJ shook her head and went back to sleep.

The next morning....

"Hi honey, how did you sleep," CJ asked Derek when he came downstairs.

"I didn't. They kept me up all night!"

"Well they're babies. They don't know how to ask for a glass of water or walk into the bedroom and tell us they had a bad dream or tell us that they're hungry," Toby explained.

"Whatever." Derek looked down at the breakfast that had been set before him. He pushed it aside.

"I'm not very hungry. I'm going to go get dressed." He left the room.

"Do you think he's okay," CJ asked.

"I have a feeling that it has begun."

"What has?"

"The sibling rivalry."

"Oh no," CJ said.

"Oh yes." He took a sip of coffee and ate his breakfast. CJ did the same. They only hoped that the sibling rivalry wouldn't be too bad.
