A Second Chance

Toby left the room, leaving the four staffers speechless.  He knew he had done the right thing just then, telling them the truth.  He took a deep breath and started to walk over to the 'debate.'

"So did you tell them," Andi said from behind.

"Wow, you sure know how to make a guy have a heart attack," he said as he nearly jumped a mile into the air.  He turned to face her.  "Yes, I told them."

"And?"

"They were shocked.  Just like I was when you told me.  What I don't understand is why you refuse to marry me.  Andi, we're having twins here.  Why don't you want to raise them together?"  He found a bench and the two sat down.

"I just think that it would be really bad for you.  You know with all the press and stuff.  They already know you're divorced.  Can you imagine what the papers would say?"

"Yes.  They would say 'Congresswoman Andrea Wyatt and White House Communications Director get married.'"  he looked at her.  "What's so wrong with that?"  He took her hand.

She sighed and looked up at the starry sky and then at Toby.  "I don't know.  I'm just… afraid, I guess."

"Of what?"

"Of fighting again.  Toby, I don't want us to get married only to start to fight again."

"Andi, if you remember correctly, the reason we got divorced was because of *me*.  I never had the time to give you what you wanted: a baby.  Never even had time to talk about adoption in depth.  But we have a chance to start all over now."  He put a hand on hers.  "We have been given a second chance here.  Why not take it?"  He looked into her eyes.

She shook her head.  "I don't know, I just don't know if I could face having to go through a bitter divorce--"

"Stop saying that.  You don't know that would happen," he said gently.  "Personally, I doubt it would happen.  I mean, we both live in DC so we could keep our jobs, we both make enough money to raise them," he said as he put his hand on her stomach, "and we… we love each other."

She smiled softly and looked up at him.

"Is that a yes?"  He asked.

"It's a 'let me think about it and get back to you,'" she said with a small smile.  "Now come on, we have to get over to the 'debate' before Sam starts to imitate you."  She laughed to herself.

"Gee, thanks."  He stood up and gave her his hand to help her up.

She took it and they walked over to the debate, just in time to watch Sam act as Governor Ritchie again.  He helped her sit down and then sat down next to her.  Perhaps, just perhaps, this was going to be a second chance for the two of them.
