Adjustments ~ 9

"Ok, everyone out." CJ smiled as she looked at the clock. "It's getting late."

"For whom?" Josh looked at his watch.

"For Derek." CJ whispered while kicking him.

"I'm not tired." Derek said.

"It's eleven at night, we have to get you enrolled in school tomorrow." CJ mentioned.

"I'm smart, I don't need school." Derek said.

"If you want to be a pilot you need school." Leo smiled as he started to put on his coat.

"Ok, I'll be a writer like my dad."

"I went to school longer then you might like." Toby smiled shyly.

"Fine, I'll go to sleep. And I'll go to school." Derek pouted.

"Don't pout boy." Toby joked and picked him up and started tickling him.

"Stop." Derek managed to get out between laughs.

"I can't seem to stop." Toby joked as he carried him up stairs.

"See ya Toby." Sam, Josh, and Leo all yelled.

"Bye." Toby yelled from upstairs.

"Thanks for coming." CJ smiled as they all hugged her.

"Congratulations CJ. Good luck with Toby." Josh joked.

"Shut up." CJ punched him in the arm with a smile. CJ made sure they all got out and then shut the door. She walked upstairs to Derek's room and heard Toby reading him a story. CJ stood in the hallway, smiling at the way Toby was reading it.

Toby was getting all the voices right, which made Derek not only smile, but laugh a little as well. Toby read three chapters of "Charlotte's Web" to Derek that night. When he noticed that he had fallen asleep in his arms, Toby picked him up and put him in bed. He turned off the light and walked out of the room and nearly ran into CJ. "You scared me half to death," he whispered.

"I'm sorry, but you're so good with him," CJ said, smiling. "He really looks up to you. I mean, he wants to be a writer."

"So he says now. Tomorrow he'll want to be the Press Secretary." CJ hit his arm. "Come on, let's get some sleep. We have to enroll him in school tomorrow."

"Okay." They walked down the hall to their bedroom, changed into their pajamas, and fell asleep in each other's arms.

Some time during the night, Toby felt something tapping his arm. "Hmm?" He murmured.

"Dad," Derek whispered.

Toby opened his eyes and tried to focus in the dark. "Derek? What's wrong?"

"I had a really bad dream," he said, crying a little.

"Oh, it's okay. Here, why don't we go into your room so we don't wake CJ--mom."

"Okay," he sniffled.

Once in Derek's room, Toby sat down on the bed with Derek. "Do you want to talk about it?" Derek nodded and started crying at the same time. Toby pulled him onto his lap and held him as he cried. "It's okay," he said quietly. "Do you still want to tell me?" He nodded. "Okay. What was your dream about?"

"Well, it was..." Derek rested his head on Toby's chest. "It was a bad dream about us."

"Us?"

"You, me, and mom."

"What about us?"

"In my dream, you two were shot." Derek cried.

"Derek?"

"I know it was just a dream, but it felt so real." Derek couldn't control the tears.

"It's ok." Toby stroked Derek's hair and kissed him on the head. "We're not going anywhere."

"But what if something happens and you can't do anything to stop it."

"Let me tell you something." Toby patted Derek gently on the back. "My whole life, I always wanted a family. I wanted to be able to come home to a wife and kids. Well, I had that once. I was married to a nice lady who I loved with all my heart. And we had a baby girl."

"Really?" Derek asked, wiping away the tears.

"Yeah." Toby said.

"What's her name?"

"Her name was Katie."

"Was?" Derek asked confused.

"Well, her and her mom both passed away." Toby took a deep breath.

"How?"

"It was a car accident." Toby answered.

"I'm sorry dad." Derek hugged him.

"Thanks pal." Toby could feel the tears begin to flow down his face. "So this is why I'm going to make a promise to you right now." Toby looked at Derek. "I will protect you and your mom with every fiber in my being. I promise."

"Ok." Derek smiled.

"You feel better?"

"Yeah." Derek kissed his dad.

"I never told anyone about what I just told you." Toby looked down at Derek.

"I won't tell anyone."

"Thanks." Toby kissed him again and held him until he fell asleep. Not knowing that CJ was listening the whole time.

Toby laid Derek back in his bed and kissed his forehead. As he was doing this, CJ snuck back into their room so that Toby wouldn't know that she heard what he was talking about with Derek. Toby came back into their room and climbed into bed. He turned to CJ. "Feel better," he asked.

"Hmm?"

He laughed a little, "I know you were there."

"Where?"

"Outside Derek's door."

"Oh. Well, I heard him whispering about a bad dream, then I heard you two get up and go to his room. I'm sorry."

"No, it's okay."

"Really?"

"Yeah. Now let's get some shuteye so we can face tomorrow."

"Okay." He kissed her and the two fell asleep.
