Adjustments ~ 8

"Well, as CJ said, we are getting married soon." Toby said nervously.

"Toby, we know this." Leo said. "The question that we have is when is the wedding?"

"Next weekend." Toby mumbled with a smile.

"What?" Josh said.

"Next weekend!" Toby snapped.

"Congratulations you two." Leo smiled and hugged CJ and shook Toby's hand.

"Thanks Leo." CJ smiled.

"Look what they got me mom." Derek smiled and held up a plane.

"Wow, that's cool." CJ smiled.

"Mom?" Sam and Josh looked at each other.

"Shut up." CJ smacked each one in the head.

"I want to be a pilot." Derek smiled. "Or a writer like my dad." Derek smiled as he looked over at Toby who was starring off into space.

"Like father like son I always say." Josh smiled.

"You never say that." Sam argued.

"Shut up." Josh said quietly while hitting him in the arm.

"So, are you two excited?" Leo asked CJ and Toby.

"Very." CJ smiled.

"What about you Toby?" Leo said.

Toby didn't say anything for a moment. "Toby?" Sam said, trying to get his attention.

"Hmm?" Toby said, in a daze.

"Are you excited about the wedding?"

"Oh, uh, yeah, of course I am," he said quietly, in a monotone. CJ looked at him, her smile fading. "Toby, can I talk to you for a minute please?"

"Yeah." He followed CJ into the kitchen.

"What on earth is going on with you? Why don't you want to get married?"

"What are you talking about," he asked, surprised.

"You sure didn't sound like you wanted to get married back there," she said, gesturing to the living room where everyone else was.

"CJ, I do want to marry you..."

"Then why don't you sound like you want to?" A few tears started falling down her cheeks.

He looked at her and wiped her tears from her eyes. "I'm just nervous. I keep remembering what happened with Andi and me."

"I'm not Andi, Toby. That won't happen with us. I love you, and I always will."

"I love you too," he said as he walked closer to her and kissed her. "I guess I should go back in there and tell them that marrying you is going to be the greatest thing in my life." He smiled and took her hand and walked back into the living room.

"Ah, you decided to come back" Josh said. "We thought you two were--"

"Shut up, Josh," Toby said. "Um, listen everyone, I'm sorry about how I sounded before. CJ and I are getting married next weekend, and we are probably the most excited that we have ever been," he said, this time with enthusiasm and a smile on his face. "And we are going to even be a family," he said as he took Derek's hand and hugged him. He looked over at CJ who had a large smile on her face and nodded.

"We're all so very happy for you both," Leo said.

"So, have you told the President about your marriage plans yet?"

CJ and Toby looked at each other.

"I'm thinking that's a no." Sam smiled.

"We haven't got around to it yet." CJ smiled.

"He's going to have to know." Leo said.

"We'll tell him." CJ said. "Soon."

"Yeah right." Josh grinned.

"He'll want a big wedding..." Toby started.

"Toby, he's not getting married, you are." Leo said.

"Don't worry about him."

"Yeah." Toby said unconvincingly.

"Trust me, he'll be so happy." Leo smiled. "Now, what do you two have in mind for the wedding?"

"Something small." CJ smiled.

"And quick." Toby mumbled.

"What was that?" Josh asked.

"Nothing." Toby said quickly.

"Just family and friends are invited." CJ smiled.

"Oh, sorry Josh." Sam joked.

"Funny." Josh glared at him.

"Hey CJ, I got the President on the phone if you want to talk to him." Leo smiled while holding up his cell.

"Um, ok." CJ said quietly as she walked over to the phone.

She glared at Leo as she took the phone. She cleared her voice, "Hello, Mr. President."

"CJ! I hear you have something to tell me," Jed said in a rather enthusiastic tone. CJ looked at Leo who shrugged.

"Um, yes sir. I think that it would be better if Toby and I were to tell you this news in person though, since--"

"No, no, I like talking over the phone. I don't get to talk to friends over the phone very often."

"Sir, are you feeling all right," CJ asked. "I mean, you sound so...happy. I haven't even told you anything yet."

"Oh, I'm fine," he said. "I just had a little back pain."

"Oh no," CJ muttered.

"What's wrong," Leo asked quietly.

"Back pain," CJ mouthed to the group, who made a groaning sound all at once.

"Sir, you took your medication, right?" She asked, knowing what the answer would be.

"Yes indeed! I took the small pill and the bigger one. I don't know which is which."

"Okay, maybe I should just tell you this another time--"

"No, no, don't be silly--Charlie I am fine. I'm sorry CJ, just a little distraction." He looked over at Charlie who rolled his eyes.

"Not again," he said to himself.

Jed ignored him. "So, what's your news CJ? I'm eager to hear it."

"Okay. Toby and I are going to get married." She clenched her teeth, waiting for his response.

"You are? That's wonderful! Oh, you'll have to have Abbey help you plan it. We can have it in the Rose Garden. A beautiful ceremony--"

"Actually," she said, interrupting him, "Toby and I wanted to have a simple wedding. Just family and friends, nothing fancy."

"Ah, I see," he said, "I just have one question."

"What's that, sir?"

"Are Abbey and I invited to this glorious event?"

She smiled.

"What? What did he say," Josh asked.

"Shut up, Josh," Sam said, "You sound like you're in kindergarten." Josh stuck his tongue out at Sam. Sam ignored it. "What did he say," he asked.

CJ rolled her eyes, "He asked if he and Abbey are invited," she said quietly. She then turned her attention back to the phone. "Yes, Mr. President, you and Abbey are invited. You're more than welcome to join Toby and me in holy matrimony."

"Why thank you, CJ, that's very kind of you. I'd love to keep talking, but Charlie is currently pulling the phone from my ear, telling me to go to bed. I will see you tomorrow."

"Yes sir," she said, giggling a little. She said goodbye and hung up the phone and gave it back to Leo. "This will be interesting," she said, smiling.
