Adjustments ~ 36

"Listen." CJ leaned in. "Derek feels likes he's in a terrible place. He can't remember anything that happened to him. He's lost in his own little World. What will happen to him if he finds out that his father is alive while he's trying to heal from what just happened to him?" CJ asked. "He knows us. If you want to do what's right for him, allow him to stay with us. Until he gets better. And then we can tell him about you. But let him get his life back on track before throwing him another curve ball at him."

"Can you honestly tell me that you will allow him to see me when he's better?"

"Yes." CJ nodded. "Just let him heal first. It might take a while, but give it time. He'll thank you for it later. I promise."

"What do you think?" Rob asked Toby.

"I think it's a good idea."

"Yeah, so do I." Rob looked down. "I just want my son to know me."

"He will. Just give it some time. He needs to get better first."

He nodded, "Alright. I'll wait."

"Thank you," CJ said. "That's all we ask."

"I'll go now, I'll leave you two alone." Rob walked out the door.

"That was weird." CJ said. "I thought he would have said more, or would have wanted to see stuff that Derek has done since he's been gone."

Toby shrugged, "Maybe this is just too much of a shock for him, that people took him in."

"Yeah." She looked down and saw something on the ground. "What's this?" Toby looked at it and his jaw nearly hit the floor.

"It's heroine."

CJ looked at him. "What?!"

"It's--"

"I heard what you said, I just don't...I thought...his lawyer said that he has been clean for five years." She bent down to pick up the bag.

"Don't! Don't touch that, CJ. It has his fingerprints on it. We can have the police come here and take it."

She nodded.

"Call Sam. Now."

"Yeah." She went into the kitchen.

Toby took out his phone and called Rob's lawyer.

"Hello?" He answered.

"Hi, this is Toby Ziegler, the guy you had thrown out of the hospital."

"Oh, yes, hello. What do you want?"

"I wanted to tell you that your client isn't as clean as you thought he was."

"What?" Brad was confused.

"He came to our house earlier to talk and CJ found a bag of heroine on the ground."

"How do I know it's not yours?"

"Because she didn't touch it and the police are coming here to take it."

"Damn."

"Yes. How could you let your client out when he isn't clean?!"

"Look, I'll get this straightened out." He hung up.

Toby hung up as well.

Meanwhile, CJ called Sam.

"Sam Seaborn." Sam picked up.

"Sam, it's CJ."

"What's going on? You sound upset."

"I am. That jerk was here when we got home."

"Who?"

"Derek's father."

"I'll be right over, I'll get him out of there."

"No, he's gone."

"Then why are you calling me?"

"Sam, I think we just won our case."

"CJ, what..."

"He dropped something that is very important to him."

"No way?"

"Toby called the Lawyer, I think he's on his way. Get over here."

"I'm on my way, remember, don't let anyone touch it until the police get there."

"I promise."

"I'm on my way." Sam hung up.

"What did he say?" Toby asked.

"He said to make sure not to touch it until the police get here."

"I knew that much." Toby said. Just then, they heard the sirens.

Toby opened the door. "Hello officer."

"Mr. Ziegler. You called us about finding drugs from a Mr. Robert Hillman?"

"Yes. Down there." He pointed down to the ground.

The officer picked the bag up with a plastic glove on. "Take this down to the lab," he instructed a fellow officer. "Make sure they match the prints we just got."

"Just got?" Toby asked.

Sam walked through the door just then.

"Yes. Apparently, he bought another bag when he found that this one was missing. He is currently in our custody."

"Yeah, I'd say you won," Sam said as he patted Toby on the back.

"Thanks Sam. Really, you helped out a lot there."

"No problem buddy." He smiled.

Just then, Brad walked through the door.

"What is going on here? Where is my client?"

"In jail where he belongs." CJ snapped. "How could you let him out knowing he was still hooked."

"I didn't know. We did drug screens and everything. It showed he was clean."

"You do know there are ways to get around those tests, don't you?" Sam said.

"Well, I do now."

"I want all charges dropped." Sam ordered. "I talk to Harry again and he said that the committee is dropping all charges against my client. The boy that jumped Derek came forward and admitted what he did. The social services understand there was nothing CJ or Toby could do." Sam smiled.

"What does this mean?" CJ smiled and grabbed Toby's arm.

"They are drawing up the adoption papers tomorrow."

Sam smiled. "Congratulations."

CJ embraced Sam. "Thank you! Oh this is the best news we have had in weeks!"

"The best?" Toby asked, touching her stomach.

"Okay, close to the best." She smiled.

The police and Rob's lawyer left and CJ and Toby went to the hospital to visit Derek.

"Mom, dad," he said smiling. His speech was still slow, but he was sitting up now.

"Hi sweetie." CJ hugged and kissed him.

"Hey there tough guy," Toby said as he hugged Derek.

"What's...going on?"

CJ looked at Toby. He gestured for her to tell.

"Well, we have some news."

"What is it?"

"The adoption papers are being drawn up now."

"They are?!"

"Yep," Toby said, smiling from ear to ear. "There is one thing we should tell you though."

"What?"

"Your dad...your real dad came and wanted to take you back."

"But he's in jail."

"He was, until about five years ago. He got out and wanted to come and have you live with him, but something happened. You're still going to come and live with us."

There were tears in Derek's eyes. CJ and Toby knew that Derek's heart was broken, but they also knew he was happy.

A week later, he was allowed to go home. He had yet to remember what happened. But that didn't matter to him because his now mom and dad were getting married. He had finally adjusted to a new life. And he couldn't be happier.
