CJ and Toby fell asleep. They didn't know how tired they really were. Next thing they knew, the phone rang. Toby jumped up and ran to the phone.
"Yes." Toby answered quickly.
"Mr. Ziegler, it's Derek's doctor. I told you that I would keep you notified if something happened."
"Yes." Toby grabbed CJ's hand.
"Derek woke up about five minutes ago. He's still a little out of it because of the pain medication, but he's awake."
"Thank heavens." Toby smiled and hugged CJ tightly.
"Can we see him?" Toby asked.
"Well, I know you already have."
"What?" Toby tried to lie.
"I had a feeling you wouldn't take no for an answer. I had the nurse keep an eye on you. She saw you go in."
"She didn't stop me."
"I asked her if you tried to sneak in, to just let you in."
"Sorry about that."
"It's fine. Now, if you want. You can come see your son and not have to feel like you are going to get caught." The doctor joked.
"We'll be right down."
Toby hung up the phone and looked at CJ.
"Should we be getting dressed," CJ asked.
"Oh yes. Derek woke up about five minutes ago." Toby smiled and hugged CJ.
They hurried up and got dressed and got into the car and drove to the hospital. Once there, a nurse directed them to the room that Derek was in. The two walked in.
"Derek," CJ said quietly.
"Mom, dad," he said hoarsely.
"Oh, we're so glad that you're okay," CJ said as she kissed his forehead, since he was still connected to several machines and couldn't hug him.
"I'm sorry," he said as tears started to fall down his face.
"Sorry for what," Toby asked as he walked over to the other side of Derek.
"Sorry for what happened. If I had told you the truth--"
"No, don't say that. None of this was your fault." CJ said.
"She's right, buddy." Toby said as he put a hand through Derek's hair.
Derek nodded a little.
"I'm going to call everyone," Toby said as he started to go to the door.
"Toby."
"Yeah?"
"It's 2am. Who do you think is going to be awake?"
"I think that they would like to know that our son is okay."
She sighed and nodded, "Fine, fine, but if you get yelled at or spanked, don't say I didn't warn you."
He shook his head and walked out of the room and to the nurse's station.
"May I use the phone?"
"Sure." The nurse put the phone up on the desk so that Toby could use it.
Sam's house......
"Hello," he said very groggily.
"Sam, it's Toby."
"What the hell are you doing, calling me at--"
"Derek woke up." Toby said, interrupting Sam.
Sam sprang up. "He did?"
"Yeah. His speech is a little slow, but other than that..." Toby couldn't finish what he was saying. "Sam, you saved his life."
"I just helped out." Sam smiled.
"No, you saved his life."
"I didn't."
"You did though."
"I didn't."
"You did!" Toby snapped.
"Ok, I did." Sam said quickly. "You need me to come down?"
"No, it's ok. You can come in the morning. Hey, could you do me a favor?"
"Sure."
"Call everyone and tell them that Derek's awake."
"I'm not going to get yelled at from everyone."
"Sam!"
"Ok, ok. I'm on it."
"Thank you." Toby smiled. "I'll see you later."
"Yeah." Sam smiled and hung up the phone. Toby walked back in the room and smiled.
"That was quick." CJ said.
"I called Sam. He's going to call everyone else."
"Didn't want to get yelled at?" She smiled.
"Maybe." He kissed her and then looked back down to Derek. "How are you feeling pal?"
"I'm ok." Derek said slowly. "I just have one question."
"What's that?"
"Where am I?" He asked. CJ and Toby just looked at each other worried.
"You're in the hospital, Derek," CJ said as she held his hand.
"Why? What happened to me?"
"CJ, would you..."
"Yeah." She looked at Derek. "I'll be right back." She kissed him again and walked out of the room.
Toby looked at Derek. "One of your classmates hurt you...badly."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
Meanwhile, CJ went to find the doctor. She finally ran into him out in the hall. She walked towards him. "Doctor!"
"Mrs. Ziegler."
"Why can't Derek remember what happened to him?" She said in a panicked tone.
"I was going to explain that over the phone to your husband, but he hung up too quickly." He sighed. "Derek has a short term memory loss. That means that he doesn't remember what has gone on probably when he got hurt. In other words, that day to him, doesn't exist."
CJ looked very worried. "Will he ever remember?"
"Yes, he will most likely remember everything in the next week or so. But I must warn you, that when he does remember what happened, he will probably be quite scared, so you'll have to be there for him."
"What if he's at school?"
"We can call the school if you want, and tell them about the situation."
She nodded, "Thank you."
"No problem." The doctor smiled a little and walked into another patient's room.
CJ walked back to the room. Before she went into the room, one of the nurses stopped her.
"Mrs. Ziegler, you have a phone call."
"Ok, I'll be right there." CJ said and then ran quickly back to the room. She motioned for Toby to come out.
"I'll be right back pal." Toby said and went out to see CJ. "What did he say?"
"It's a short term memory loss. He will probably remember in the next week or two. But when he does, he's going to need us there."
"Ok. Lets just stay with him tonight." Toby started back to the room.
"I have a phone call, I'll be right back.
"Who is it?"
"I'm not sure." CJ said. "Tell him I'll be right back and I'm right outside."
"I'll tell him." Toby kissed CJ. "He's going to be ok. I see it in his eyes."
"So do I." CJ smiled. "I think we are all going to be ok." She smiled.
"I'll be back."
"Ok."
CJ walked over to the phone.
"What line is it?" She asked the nurse.
"One."
"This is CJ." CJ picked up the phone.
"CJ!" Jed said. "How are you? How's Derek?"
"Mr. President?!"
"Well, who else would it be?"
"Uh...I don't know."
"Well, then I guess it's me."
CJ sighed and laughed a little. "Derek's doing much better. He woke up, but has a short term memory loss. The doctor says he'll remember things in about a week or so."
"Well, I'm glad he woke up. The little guy had me worried there."
"Yes, sir. He had us quite worried as well."
"Well, give him my best. I just wanted to see how you were doing."
"Thank you sir. We're doing much better now."
"I'm glad to hear that. Well, I must be going now. I'll talk to you and Toby later."
"Yes sir, and thank you for calling." CJ smiled.
"Of course, Claudia Jean. Talk to you soon. Bye."
"Bye." She hung up the phone and walked back into the room.
