Adjustments ~ 22

They all finished dinner at the same time. Derek ran to the phone and called Jack while CJ and Toby did the dishes.

"Hey Toby?" CJ said.

"Yes." Toby grinned.

"About this whole wedding thing. You know, next weekend is down to five days now." CJ joked.

"Yes."

"Well, I was thinking maybe tomorrow would be a good day to get my dress."

"You want my credit card."

"No, I..." CJ stopped for a minute. "Ok, yes I need it."

"Fine, remind me in the morning."

"When are you going to get your tux?"

"I have a tux.

"You got yours already?"

"I've had it." Toby smirked.

"Toby! You are not wearing the same tux that you do during the State of the Union!"

"Why?" Toby started laughing.

"You were joking just then."

"Yep. Told you I was funny." Toby laughed, but stopped after CJ tossed water on him.

"Yeah, you should take that act on the road." CJ said sarcastically.

"Did you just toss water on me?"

"Man Toby, you're quick."

"Ok." Toby tossed a larger amount on CJ.

"No you didn't." CJ screamed. She picked up a full glass of water and poured it on Toby's head.

"That's it." Toby grabbed a pan full of water and poured it all over her.

Next thing they knew, they were drenched and still getting each other wet.

"Guys?" Derek screamed. "How old are you two?"

"Older then you are." CJ said.

"Truce." CJ put her hand out.

"Truce." Toby shook it.

"I'll get you later." CJ whispered.

"Jack's parents are on the phone. They want to talk to you to make sure he can come over."

CJ took the phone. "Hello?"

"Hi Mrs. Ziegler, this is Mary-Anne Harmon. Jack's mom."

"Oh, hello, it's nice to talk to you. Derek said that he and Jack have become good friends already."

"Yes, that's what Jack told me. You see, Jack doesn't have any other friends, well except for Derek. And it's hard for me to trust other people, if you know what I mean."

"I know what you mean," CJ said as she sat down.

"Trust me, Toby and I are very caring people, and would love for Jack to come over tomorrow."

"That's wonderful. Thank you so much."

"It's my pleasure. Jack seems like a wonderful friend for Derek."

"Thanks. I'm sorry to cut this short, but I have a call on the other line."

"Oh, okay, well we look forward to seeing Jack tomorrow."

"So does he," Mary-Anne said as she laughed a little.

"Well I'll let you go now. Bye." CJ hung up the phone. "What a nice woman."

"That's good. We wouldn't want our son to have friends with bad parents." CJ smacked his butt.

"Hey!" All she could do was laugh.

"You sounded so much like a girl just then."

"Did not."

"Did too."

"Did not."

"Okay!" Derek said. "So, can he come over?"

"Yes, he can," CJ said.

"Thank you!" Derek kissed CJ and ran upstairs.

"You made his day." Toby smiled.

"Yeah, well I guess I get to play the good guy." She smiled and sat down in his lap.

"Well hi." Toby smiled.

"Hi." She smiled and kissed him.

"So what do you want to do for the wedding?" He whispered.

"I just want it to go off without any problems." She rested her head on his.

"Same here." He smiled and kissed her on the cheek. Next thing they both knew they were fast asleep.

Derek covered the two with a blanket. Then he went upstairs and went to sleep. He made sure to set his alarm so that he would be able to wake up CJ and Toby in the morning.

"AAAAAHHHHHHHH!"

"What was that," CJ asked, bolting up.

"I don't know, but it sounded like Derek."

"Mom! Dad!"

"We're coming," CJ called as she ran up the stairs, Toby trying to follow.

"What happened?" CJ asked.

"Someone just threw a rock through the window!" He pointed to the broken glass.

"What the..." CJ looked at the huge rock. There was a not attached to it.

"Toby!"

"What," he asked. "Oh my G-d. What happened?"

"Read this."

"Okay." He read the note.

'Dear Little Nerd Boy,

'If you even think about telling mommy and daddy what happened at school today, you can kiss your life goodbye. Sweet dreams.

Your Worst Nightmare.'

"Derek, what happened at school today?" CJ asked.

"Nothing," Derek looked down.

"Derek, you have to tell us." Toby said.

"I can't. You told me if I did nothing I would become the bigger man. If I tell you, then I'm doing something."

"Derek, sometimes it's something you have to do." Toby said.

"Did you ever tell?"

"Yes, I had too. But when I did, it was too late."

"Why?"

"I shouldn't tell you, but you need to tell us who these kids are."

"Tell me why you told too late dad?" Derek snapped.

"Derek..." Toby looked over and saw CJ nod her head.

"Ok, I told you I got beat up a lot. Well, they used to follow me to school and get me then. Well, I had this best friend who told me not to worry when he was around. So I never did. Well, one day when we were walking to school. That group of boys came over. They pushed me down and started kicking me. My best friend got them off me. He went over and talked to the boys for a minute while I got myself up. Next thing I knew, my friend was telling me to get to school, that he would be right behind me. He smiled like he always did, so I knew he would be ok. I ran all the way back to school. And I didn't see him for the rest of the day. I ran home after school and my dad was there. He looked sad and hurt. He sat me down and told me that my friend was found in the lake this afternoon. He had been stabbed." Toby started to cry. "Derek, I swore to myself I would protect my kids. You need to tell me."

"They're in my class. Brian, David, Bruce, and Aaron. Aaron is the leader of the gang." Derek looked down.

"You did the right thing Derek, I'm proud of you." CJ kissed his forehead.

"Dad?"

"Yeah."

"Did you know something was going to happen?"

"Now that I think about it, I think that my friend knew he wasn't going to make it to school. He just wanted them to take him and not me."

Derek looked at Toby and CJ. "Do you think that is going to happen to me and Jack?"

"Absolutely not," CJ said. "We are not going to let anything like that happen to you, Jack, or anyone else who is being bullied."

"How do you know? How do you know I'll be safe at school tomorrow?"

"We will wait until you get inside the school before leaving. We won't walk you in, because you probably wouldn't want that." Toby said.

"Okay." Derek wiped his eyes. "I'm still scared though."

"I--we know you are," Toby said as he held Derek. "If anything happens, go talk to your teacher or principal or someone, okay?"

"Okay." He looked up at them. "Thanks." He hugged Toby and then went and hugged CJ. "I guess I'll try to go to bed now."

"Okay," CJ said. "If you get scared again, don't hesitate to come in our room and tell us, okay?"

"Yeah."

"Goodnight, Derek. We love you," CJ said as she kissed his head and tucked him in.

"Goodnight, son," Toby said as he then kissed Derek's head.

The two walked out of the room, unsure of what would happen the next day.
