Adjustments ~ 11

"So, can you tell me a little about yourselves?" Ms. Klein asked.

"Well, we both work in the White House. We needed to get Derek enrolled in a school close to work." CJ smiled.

"The White House, wonderful. What do you two do there?"

"Well, I'm the Press Secretary for the President, and he's the Communications Director." CJ smiled.

"Oh my." Ms. Klein smiled. "Very hard jobs I would think. I'm amazed you found time to raise a great kid."

"Actually, we're adopting him." CJ said. "It's a long story." CJ smiled.

"Very long." Toby mumbled.

"Be quiet dear." CJ said while kicking him under the table.

"Well, it's the middle of the school year, and we hate to have kids start out so late in the year."

"Ok." CJ rolled her eyes back, she knew where this was going.

"CJ, don't." Toby stopped her. "Look, Ms. Klein. We're trying to be good parents here. We want Derek to have an education and we want him to make friends. We're not here looking for a babysitter, we want out son to go to school. And not just any school, this school." Toby said while standing up. "Like my wife said, I'm the Communications Director. I can make things happen that you might not like, please, don't make me do that." Toby said.

"Mr. Ziegler, I..." Ms. Klein looked over at Derek and saw him smiling. "He can start tomorrow."

"Thank you Ms. Klein." Toby shook her hand and took CJ and Derek out of the office.

"You really are Batman." CJ smiled as she kissed him.

"Gross. Get a room." Derek hit both of them.

CJ smiled at Derek, "Will you stop saying that please?"

"Okay, only if you tell me what you said to dad when he gave you the keys to drive."

CJ looked at Toby, and Toby looked at CJ.

"Nothing you need to know for another ten years or so," Toby said as they headed back out to the car.

"Please?"

"No," CJ and Toby said at the same time.

"Okay, okay."

They got to the car and got in. "Uh oh," CJ said before they went anywhere.

"What, is your car dead now too?" Toby asked sarcastically.

"No," she said giving him a look, "What are we going to do with Derek all day? I mean, we can't just let him stay at the White House. He'll get bored out of his mind."

"No I won't," Derek said from the back.

"No one will be able to take care of you though," Toby said.

"Well, we don't have any other choice but to take him with us today," CJ said as she started the car and drove to the White House.

"Are you sure?" Toby asked.

"We'll find someone to watch him," she said.

"You know I'm right here," Derek said.

CJ laughed, "Sorry."

"It's okay." He smiled. He was going to finally get to see where his parents worked.

After CJ parked the car, she got out and opened the door for Derek.

"I don't understand." Derek said confused.

"What?" Toby asked while getting out.

"I thought you guys worked at a white house, not a hotel." Derek pointed.

"This is the White House. We work in the West Wing." CJ smiled as they all walked in.

"Wow, it's huge." Derek said as they walked in.

"Tony, can we get my son a badge please?" Toby asked the guard.

"Yes sir."

"Toby!" Ginger ran over to her boss. "Where have you been, you have the meeting."

"What meeting?" Toby asked confused as he was handed Derek's badge.

"With Wilson about the NEA." Ginger said as Toby finished putting Derek's badge on.

"Crap! I forgot about that. When is it?" Toby asked.

"Ten minutes ago." Ginger said.

"CJ..." Toby turned to her.

"Go."

"Thank you." Toby bent down before running off and kissed Derek on the head. "Have fun pal." He walked over to CJ.

"Did you really mean what you said this morning?" Toby whispered in her ear.

"What?"

"No sex." Toby gave CJ the puppy dog look.

"Go to work." CJ couldn't help but laugh and pushed him away.

"CJ!" Carol ran over to her boss.

"Carol, now I know I don't have a meeting." CJ grabbed Derek's hand and led him to her office.

"Well, you do. Kinda." Carol looked down.

"Carol." CJ said in a warning voice as she looked in her office and saw a familiar face. "Why is Ann Stark in my office?" CJ growled.

"You were supposed to have a meeting with her..."

"Tomorrow." CJ finished.

"I moved it up."

"When?"

"Yesterday."

"Carol." CJ whined.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know it would be a problem."

"Can you watch Derek?"

"There's a secretaries meeting in five minutes."

"Josh?"

"He's in a meeting with Barryhill."

"Sam?"

"He had to go on the hill for a breifing."

"Leo?"

"He's in the situation room."

"Is there anyone who can watch Derek?" CJ asked Carol.

"I'll be ok mom." Derek smiled. CJ looked down at him with a glare. "Or maybe not." Derek looked straight ahead.

"What do I do Carol?"

"Um, I don't know."

"Carol! That doesn't help!"

"I'm sorry, CJ, I don't know what else to say."

"Okay, I'll find someone." She peered into her office. "Ann, I'll be right there." Ann nodded. CJ walked with Derek down the Corridor.

"Good morning, Claudia Jean," the President said.

CJ turned around, "Good morning, Mr. President."

"President?! Like of the United States?" Derek asked, eyes wide.

CJ rubbed her forehead.

"Is everything okay, CJ?"

"Well, I can't find anyone to watch Derek here."

"Oh, so this is the famous Derek," Jed said. "How do you do, young man, I'm Jed Bartlet."

"I'm Derek Ziegler. It's nice to meet you."

"What nice manners you have there, Derek." Jed smiled. "So what was this problem, CJ?"

"I can't find anyone to watch Derek."

"I'll watch him." Jed said.

"What?" CJ said.

"Cool!" Derek said.
