"Toby." CJ pushed him from her side of the bed.
"Hmm?" He mumbled.
"Shut that alarm off before I break it." She said about the annoying alarm.
"Sorry." Toby reached over and shut it off. "It can't be morning." He whined.
"Sadly." She looked over at him.
"What?"
"Why did you tell Derek that last night knowing I was there?"
"I knew I would have to tell you sooner or later."
"What happened?"
"Drunk driver." Toby looked up.
"Was this before Andy?"
"Yeah, I thought I was over it when I married Andy, but.."
"You weren't."
"Yeah." He looked at her.
"And now?"
"I'm still not over it, I don't think I ever will be. But I know that I love you and Derek, and I want this." Toby laid on his side, facing CJ. "I love you CJ. I want to spend the rest of my boring life with you." He smiled.
"I love you too." She kissed him and smiled. "I'm always here if you need to talk."
"I know." Toby smiled and then sniffed. "Do you smell that?"
"Yeah, it smells like burned toast." CJ said.
"Good morning mom and dad." Derek came in. "I made breakfast." He smiled.
"Well wasn't that sweet," CJ said. "Thank you Derek."
"You're welcome." He had a big smile on his face.
"This wouldn't be some way of getting out of going to school would it," Toby asked.
"Uh..."
"Yeah, that's what I thought." Toby couldn't help but laugh. "Sorry kiddo. You have to go."
"That's what I thought you'd say."
"Hey, don't be scared," CJ said. "The first day of school is always scary. But I bet you're going to make a million friends in no time."
"Really?"
"Sure. So why don't we all get dressed and go over to the school and enroll you." CJ said.
"Sounds good to me," Toby said.
"Okay," Derek mumbled.
Half an hour later, they were all ready to go.
"Derek, come downstairs, we have to get going," CJ said.
"I'm coming mom!" Derek came down the stairs with his new backpack in tow.
"Okay then, I think we're ready," Toby said as the three walked out to the car.
"Man it's cold out here," CJ said. "Toby hurry up and warm up the car."
"CJ, I hate to tell you this, but that's going to take a couple of minutes..." He saw her face. "Okay, I'll do my best."
She shook her head. "You can't park in the garage?"
"Well, what if there was an emergency? We'd have to wait for the garage door to open, and that takes a while."
"Toby."
"Yeah?"
"Turn the car on please."
"Oh. Right." He started the car, only to find that it died right after he did. He tried again, and again, but nothing.
"Darn, looks like I'll have to miss my first day of school," Derek said, pretending to be saddened.
"Very funny," CJ said. "I hate to tell you this Derek, but I too have a car, one that works." She glared at Toby.
"What? It was working fine yesterday."
She rolled her eyes and got out and opened Derek's door.
"I'm telling you mom, it's ok with me if I miss a day of school. I'll get over it." Derek said trying to keep a straight face.
"Get in the car you." CJ opened her car door and buckled him in. "School is a great place."
"Yep." Derek rolled his eyes.
"Toby, get in the car." CJ yelled as she saw Toby trying to start his again.
"Coming." Toby whined and walked over to the car.
"Don't pout." CJ hit him in the arm.
"Can I drive?"
"No, you can't drive."
"But I want to drive."
"Well, I want to drive."
"No, I think I should."
"Mom. Dad. Should I drive?" Derek said as he rolled down the window.
"No, I'm going to drive." CJ said as she took her keys out of her purse.
"What's that?" Toby pointed up. CJ and Derek both looked up and Toby grabbed the car keys from CJ. CJ looked back at Toby with her eyes opened wide.
"I'll drive." Toby smiled. CJ smirked and pushed Toby into the car with her chest. She smiled at Derek.
"If you don't give me those car keys..."
"What?" Toby asked with a smile. CJ moved her lips next to Toby ear and whispered something so Derek couldn't hear.
"Guess what? Mom's going to drive." Toby handed the keys over to CJ and opened the door for her. "After you my dear."
"Thank you." She smiled and started the car. After Toby got in, she drove off.
They got to the school that Derek was to attend and walked in. Because of the whole car ordeal, they were later than they thought they would be.
"If you only could park in the garage..." CJ started to say.
"Shut up," he said quietly.
They walked into the office, "Good morning, I'm CJ Ziegler, I called yesterday about enrolling our son, Derek into this school."
"Good morning Mr. and Mrs. Ziegler, it's nice to meet you." She knelt down and shook Derek's hand. "And it's nice to meet you too, Derek."
"It's nice to meet you, too, Ms..."
"Oh, pardon my manners. I'm Ms. Klein, the assistant principal here. Why don't we step into my office?"
The three stepped into her office.
