Wanna Talk About It?

It was well after midnight, and Toby was still sitting in his office, throwing his pink rubber ball at the wall. As he did so, he pondered on what had gone on that week. He had yelled at nearly everyone, including the President. He yelled at Josh about the leak in the reversal of school vouchers. He yelled at C.J. too. He could tell that she knew something was going on. Why else would she have asked him why he was lying to her?

But he was mostly angry with himself. Why had he taken his anger out on everyone? He wasn't even listening to Sam when he told him about the Indio and how it was causing a major oil spill in Delaware.

He stopped throwing his ball when he heard someone walking through the Communications bullpen. 'Who would be here at this hour?' He thought to himself. Several seconds later, he saw a figure in his doorway.

“What are you still doing here, C.J.?” Toby asked, taking a deep breath.

“I had some work to finish up,” she said in a tired voice. “I could ask you the same question,” she said as she came into the office and sat down on the couch.

Toby just sat there for a moment before speaking, “I'm, uh, also just finishing some work,” he said as he threw his ball at the wall.

C.J. eyed Toby's desk, “Then why is your laptop off and your notes in your briefcase?”

Toby let out a sigh and didn't say anything. He couldn't look her straight in the eye.

“Toby why are you lying to me?” C.J. asked, getting up.

He didn't answer. He just sat there looking out at the empty bullpen.

Finally, C.J. gave up, “Come on Toby, let's just go,” she said as she gestured for him to get up.

“Go where?” He asked, distantly.

“Home, you know, that place you go to sleep?”

Toby finally gave in, “Alright, alright, I'm coming 'mommy'“ C.J. turned around and gave him a glare that seemed to say 'shut up now!' It made him wince. Only she could make him wince like that.

As they walked out to the parking lot, C.J. said, “I'm sure everything will be fine tomorrow, whatever it is that's bothering you,” she said as she reached her car. “Goodnight, Toby. I wish you would tell me what's going on.” She said as she got into her car and drove off.

Toby watched her as she drove away, You'll find out soon enough, he said aloud to himself as he climbed into his car and drove off into the night.
