Helping A Friend

It was 9:00pm and Donna was getting ready to leave.

Josh had been on her back all day about getting certain memos to certain people, telling her that he couldn't read her handwriting, and so much more. All she wanted to do now was go home and relax. She continued to pack up her stuff.

On the other side of the Communications bullpen, Sam was getting ready to leave as well. He had gotten everything done on time, as usual, survived Toby's ranting and raving about his punctuation and verb usage, and even managed to sit through a long and boring staff meeting. He was ready to leave for the night.

Donna walked out of the general area of the West Wing and headed for the lobby. She checked herself out and proceeded for the parking lot. Sam was doing the same thing. He walked out to the parking lot to his car.

Donna got to her car, got in and put the key in the ignition, expecting the car to start when she turned the key. Nothing happened. She sighed, "Oh this cannot be happening to me!" She said to herself as she continued to try to start her car.

Sam on the other hand reached his car. Before he got in, however, he saw someone else get out of their car and open the hood. Being the kind person that he was, he went over to the person to see what was wrong.

"Donna?" He said as he reached her car, "What's wrong with your car?"

"I don't know," she said, not looking up, but rather under the hood to see if she could spot what was wrong. "It was fine this morning. I don't understand. All I want to do is go home, take a hot shower, and relax. That's all! Do you think that's asking too much?" She asked as she finally looked up at Sam.

"Uh, no not at all. I was kind of planning to do the same thing myself." He thought for a moment, "You want a ride home? I mean, your apartment isn't on my way home, but I'd be happy to give you a lift."

She smiled softly, "I don't want to be a bother, but thanks for offering. You've had a really long day.

You should go home," she said as she closed the hood of the car and began to gather her things from inside the car. She started to walk back to the White House when Sam stopped her.

"Where are you going?" He asked as he gently took her arm, stopping her from leaving.

"I'm going to go call a cab to come and pick me up."

"No you're not. You're coming with me. Really Donna, it's fine. I want to help you out here, you understand that, right," he asked, a small smile penetrating his face.

"Yes, I understand that you want to help, but...Oh, what the heck," she said, giving in, "Thanks, I really would appreciate a ride home."

He smiled, "Let's go then. It's getting kind of cold out here and I would rather go than stand here all night." This made her giggle.

"Yeah, okay," she said as the two began walking to Sam's car. He unlocked the door for her and let her in. He walked over to the other side of the car and got in himself. He started the car and drove off towards Donna's apartment.

The first few minutes were spent in mostly silence.

Neither one really knew what to say to the other. Sam finally broke the silence, "So I saw you running around like mad today. Did Josh send you on a million errands again," he asked, giving her a sideways glance.

She laughed a little, "Of course Josh sent me on a million errands. I don't understand why it's so hard for him to just pick up the phone and call a senator. He has me do all of that work. I give him the number, but he always gives a benign excuse." She sighed, "I think I had to rewrite a note to him about six times. Do I have extremely bad handwriting or something?"

Sam had a confused look on his face, "I have read your writing several times. I don't see anything wrong with it," he said as they came to a red light. He looked over at her.

She smiled, "Thanks. Try telling that to Josh. Or rather, convincing that my handwriting isn't horrible."

"Well, considering the fact that he is extremely stubborn and always wants his way, I think I'd leave it alone." The two laughed softly.

A few minutes later, they reached her apartment. Sam pulled into one of the visitor's spaces that were closest to the door. As Donna began to get out, she looked at him, "Thanks Sam, I owe you one."

"No, I think we're even. What with the whole Karen

Cahill thing I think we're fine," he said with a bit of a laugh.

She nodded, "Yeah, I guess you're right. But thank you for driving me home. It really was very kind of you."

"I'm just helping a friend in need," he said as he handed Donna her coat and purse. "So I guess I'll see you tomorrow then," he said as she started to get out of the car.

"Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow, and thanks again." She closed the car door and started walking up the steps to her building. He started the car and waited until she was safely inside until he drove away to his own home.
